I like the second one in your list as a good starting point. Of course every engine is a little different. It seems in general, the old urban legend of having all the mechanical advance in by 3000-3200 just isn't ideal with the low quality fuel we have at the pump now. I have been limiting the vacuum advance to 10-12 degrees on modern pump gas. I realize that's not ideal for best economy but I am not willing to run on the edge of detonation.
