Fram is located right next to me in Providence. A friend of mine used their filter on his Pontiac and had problems like yours. I have never heard anything good about them, except from Mr. Baker. Wix always gets exceptional reviews from everyone. Not a hard choice to make.

That System 1 tube made me nervous. For $85, I shouldn't be nervous. When I wiped out a bearing, that tube was full of copper. No matter how many times I pushed the ball down and used the parts washer or carb cleaner, whenever I ran a Q-tip down there, there was still copper showing up.

Causin' pain like two bad nurses.....

Had that problem in a chevy 383 I built yrs. ago.
Changed from castrol to Mobil 1.
Suggest u **** can the syntec oil.

Try it before you do anything else.
I lost 20psi running that crap in my chevy.
I know it sounds nuts but try changing to 15w-50 mobil 1.
Bet that solves your problem.

While syn. oil is not recommended on break in I can say syn. oil is far superior in every application except the diff. O.K. let me have it

FRAM UPDATE..... Just took my 69 for a ride to sort out some bugs and feel her out. Good oil pressure, water temp, etc. Got back to the garage and changed oil. Put on a new HP2! Guess what!!!! No oil pressure! Could this be? Two in a row. One PH25 from the parts store and 1 HP2 from the speed shop! I'm pissed now, I've got no filters left! I go looking for my remote setup and the System One filter but can not find my hoses! Go figure! I pulled the distributer just to make sure the pump shaft was OK and it is. I turned it by hand with a screwdriver and oil spurted out of the block! I also pulled the valve covers to make sure that I did not spit out a lifter and I hooked up a different oil pressure gage which also showed no pressure. I'm going back tomorrow to slap on the remote, one way or the other. I'll let you know what happens because i'm sure it's the filter. ... Pi$$ed!

My B.S. meter is off the scale. I can believe two oil filter failures, maybe, but turning the oil pump driveshaft by hand with a screwdriver and getting "oil out of the block"?

Let me say I've never used a Fram filter that was a direct replacement for the PF24 AC filter (the Fram PH25) so I have no opinion on those.

I've always used the HP1 filter with a remote setup utilizing Nunzi's plate that mounts on the block in place of the factory oil filter housing. Been using the HP1 in a remote setup for more than 5 years and never had any problems.

I realize others have had problems with the OEM replacement filters, however, but it hasn't deterred me from using the HP1 filter. Look at it this way. If you were going into a particular diner for 5 years and loved the food, and one person told you they went in there and thought the food sucked because they got sick after eating it, would you stop going to that diner?

BS meter? Hey I'm Canadian we don't know what BS is! That was no BS. I had taken off the filter adapter because I was grasping at straws. When I removed the distributer to check the pump shaft I turned it to see if there was any resistance and it spit oil out of the block. What can I say? I know it happened because I had to wipe it up! Scouts honor! ... Eric

Brian, your 100% right about your diner comment. I have to see things for myself too. I don't believe everything I here and see. I've heard bad things about these filters but I did not listen. Just like when I try and tell my teenager something, I guess, she's gotta see it for her self. If it is another bad filter I think I will have learned my leson even if I didn't lose the motor. I'm posting here just to say that I have first hand experience with bad filters, not here say. I'll know for sure tomorrow if the HP2 is bad. ... Eric

Brian, The pump will turn by hand unless he has a filter on then it will have resistance & you won't be able to turn it by hand as easily. As far as having 2 bad filters i highly & i mean highly doubt it. I would be checking that ball & spring in the oil pump. I've used those cheap Fram filters for years & have yet to have one cause me to lose oil pressure.

GTO- to answer your question, I do not have anything done to my bypass. Also, the Fram HP2 has always been on the stock oil filter adapter.
I have a comment and a few suggestions.
1. Turning the oil pump with a screwdriver and getting oil out the hole for the adapter only proves that the shaft isn't broken, and that unrestricted oil can flow about 6 ".
2. You may have a serious oiling problem, and I wouldn't recommend starting this engine again, with anybodys filter until you prove a couple of things.
3.Put the oil filter adapter back on with any unpoluted filter. Use or borrow or make something to spin the oil pump through the distributor hole(as in priming ).
4. Have you done this before? The reason I ask, is that when you use the reverse on the drill, you can definately feel when oil pressure developes. Sometimes the drill will start to smoke (good oil pressure) If your drill spins effortlessly, you have some sort of internal problem.
5. Remove a valve cover and listen to the oil, you can hear it coming through.(do the pass side valve cover,as it's the last to get oil. You should see oil coming out the pushrods as it works it's way to the back. It may be necessary to turn the engine over by hand every once in a while to insure all the passages are getting feed.
6. Once you've proven that your oiling system is functioning, you can put on different filters to see if things change.
7. If all this is normal, and shows no problems, then procede with startup.
8. I have always been told not to break in the engine with synthetic products, and recommend using a quality 10w40 or thicker regular type oil until this is figured out.

One other question, Where is your guage hooked up?

Wrong,
use syn. oil in every app. even the diff and trany.

Amsoil in the diff.

Can you hear me now?

The cam lube may have plugged up the filter on the break-in. I always change the oil and filter immediately after break-in.
I quit using Fram filters after I ballooned one from too much pressure when cold. It's a rather sick feeling when you pull a filter off and can feel the element loose inside.
I used AC filters for a while till I ballooned one of them too. So now I use a Mobil 1 filter. It has a synthetic fiber element which filters better and has more capacity. It also has an operating pressure rating @200psi and a burst rating of 400psi.

Bill, we're on the same wave length. I will be doing all of those things with the remote setup and the System 1 filter. My pressure is taken by the distributer. The reason that I asked about your oil filter bypass is that when you get a bad filter or you somehow plug your filter you would go into bypass and not notice anything. If I would not have had my bypass pluged I would not have noticed (IF it is my filter). I did prime the engine before startup and it seemd OK. I will prime again tomorrow.

Bill Meyer,

All of the ideas where good, but Bill was right there...Never break-in a motor with syn...
Go to a Pep Boys and buy their cheapest Filter,
$3 US..Change the oil,put in 10/40 regular....
Run it for 500/800 hundred miles,if everything is ok, put the Syn back -in..Good luck and don't get carried away with those expensive filters...
I have used cheap cardboard type filters in my race car for 5-6years, no-problems at all.....
Keep it as stock as possible, GM-engineers
weren't STUPID....Good-Luck...Dave..1033/stock

Is it possible you have a loose wire or a faulty guage?

I know it's old news but I went from a PH8 to a HP2 and the pressure increased by 5 lbs

Just got back from the shop and everything is OK. I installed the remote with the System 1 filter and then primed the motor again. My 1/2 inch drill got about 50psi on the gage with cold oil. A lot better than 0. Fired the motor and had about 60psi cold at 3000rpm and when it warmed up went to about 40psi at 3000. Drove about 15 miles on and off the throttle and the pressure stayed good. So I guess I had another bad Fram! 2 out of 3. I'm leaving for a small holiday tomorrow and I'm staying away from the Casino! Thanks for all your help. ... Eric

Hey Supergas maybe your pressure increase is due to a bad filter and your going through the bypass! LOL.... I will never trust disposable filter again. If my bypass had not been blocked I would now be running around with no filtration but good pressure! That would be great for a fresh motor! ... Eric
