OK.
Got my short block together. Rushing around with the 48 head assembly (cleaning the old Ram IV valves) ...I'm doing 2 sets of 48s with 2 sets of Ram IV valves....and 5 setd of valvesprings to chose from. Darn cheap. My point is, the other 455 .060 shortblock (with steel billet 4-bolt caps is sittin. Could be an offer to Goatman. I respect his desire to decompress, relax, and enjoy the season without rushing. I'm rushing, and don't even own slicks. H.I. Stud

Mark, I really, really apreciate that. I would still need a set of pistons, rings, bearings, oil pump, and a balance. The deal I have worked out for the 461 stroker assembly will provide me with everything I need for next year. I'm pondering the purchase of a rotary style oil pump and the accompanying oil pan mods that it requires. I think I'll have to wait untill next year to get it all together, hopefully very early in the season. I'm still kicking around all kinds of ideas/fantasies/formulas/options. It all hinges on the chassis man and his desire to feed his steadily growing family.
I will have what I believe will be a .040" stroke, .030" on the rods 1970 455 "N" crank for sale shortly for that block, if you're interested. It will be cheaper than a set of used slicks, I guarantee it! [ July 24, 2002, 03:03 PM: Message edited by: Goatman ] |

Having one or two bearings show a problem is not uncommon. On Rodney Butler's motor at Chicago and
at a previous race track two different rod bearings were showing fatigue while all of the rest were like new. One bearing on each bank but not on the same rod journal. There may be other issues here. Piston scuffing is normally a fit issue, a loading issue, or a lubrication issue. Are all of the pistons scuffed, Bruce? The piece of metal breaking off is a hard thing to track. If the metal went through the pump, the pump will show some sign of its passage. There will also be metal in all of the bearings, Mains and Rods. Sorry to hear about your motor Bruce. Hang in there and start again when your mind is clear and you have the fire in your belly again. Tom V.

Tom, I haven't inspected all of the pistons yet. I know at least a couple of them are scuffed. I threw all the parts in the garage and have been busy with other activities all this week. I will finish my inspection this weekend, hopefully.
Mr. Swain, I appologize for my earlier comments, but perhaps you should keep your opinions, which are completely false, to yourself. You ahve no knowledge of who assembled that motor, or why it failed. |

Upon closer inspection of the pistons tonight, numbers 5, 6, and 7 were all scuffed pretty bad. Number 5 and 7 were scuffed in the middle of the piston skirt and number 6 was scuffed just on the edge of the skirt. A friend that was with me seemed to think that detonation was the cause, but nothing on the piston "face", spark plugs, or combustion chambers support this theory.
Didn't get to the oil pump today, probably Sunday I will do that. |

Goatman,
Did that motor have an Eagle crank in it? I seriously doubt your missing piece of metal on the end of that bolt hole had anything at all to do with your engine failure. I suggest you look else where. Tim C

....buy an Eagle crank , all your problems will be solved.
BTW, I would still rather use my 30 y.o. stressed-out cranks! [ August 06, 2002, 10:33 AM: Message edited by: Guy Mazza ] |
