Hey,
I have a question about disk brakes, I have drum brakes all the way around my 68 bird, and i want to run disc brakes all the way around. My question is can I use disk brakes without using the brake booster? I dont have one now just a master cylinder. I dont want the extra weight up front. Thanks |

Sure you can use manual disc brakes, just be sure to use a propely sized master cylinder for your brake setup.
Also need to use the manual brake location on the pedal lever, still no biggie though... My '72 firebird is a factory manual disc/drum brake car,so even GM did that on occasion. |

I switched from manual front drum to manual disks on my car years ago (OEM setup, not aftermarket stuff) and used the same master cylinder and proportioning valve from the drum brakes. Had no problems or anything goofy happen just as long as you have a dual master cylinder. I've done it this way and many people I know have done the same on all different years X and F bodies. Switched out spindles, brake set-up, and brake hoses and away we went.

Rob,
Do you have to switch out the spindles, and does a dual master cylinder have both front and rear compartments? How would i know if i do have a dual? Thanks Again |

I was thinking that drum brakes utilized residual check valves in the master cylinders and these had to be removed when switching to disc brakes.

Rob,
Most kits I see include the spindles, so I guess those will work? Just have to tell them my year and make of car? Thanks |
