Hmmm... I think these were ordered as 400 4-speed tempests. Knafel did some tuning and added the decals. I thought the story was that to get a car specially built like that, he had to order a minimum of 50. So he did and then had a big promo at his dealership and blew them all out in a few days.

That very well could be but my Dad and a buddy of his bought them the same day right off of the show room and he said a few times over the years they were 6 bangers. I think I have a copy of an interview with Knafel stating the same. I will try to dig it out tonight
