Hey madtexan, I never saw the specs on your cam, do you have a cam card? My car had symptoms like yours and to make a long story short my compression was not as advertised (which I now know is very common), and my cam was at least 4 degrees retarded (even though it was installed dot to dot). Both of those things killed my low end and made my exhaust very rich. I installed a smaller cam and fixed those things and the car was fun again but overall power was lower than what I wanted. I later reused the first cam but upped my compression at least 1 full point and installed the cam 6 degrees advanced to get the intake valve to close where I wanted. Much more power everywhere and very happy with it now!

That's great to hear.

I found the receipt for the cam but not the specs for it. But here is what i just found on the web:
Part # - Advertised Dur - Dur @ .050 - Lift w 1.5 Rocker Arms - Lift w 1.65 Rocker Arms - Lobe Separation Angle - Intake Centerline
H.O. HC-01D - 276/288 - 220/232 - .469/.497 - .516/.547 - 114 - 108

According to Ken Crocie this cam should not have been installed with Rhodes Anti-pumpup lifters which i do have in there. Pulling the lifters out would mean just removing the intake/valley pan so not a big deal IMO.

I also re-curved the advance on my rebuilt HEI dist (springs and weights) based on an article in Pontiac Enthuesiest back in the 90's. I may have way too much advance on it too but since it didn't ping or run-on, I thought all was ok. I hope I won't have to R&R the cam but if I need to..... I will.
