What I have found is that the paint will lift if there is surface rust underneath it. So, if you have an area where the rust has seeped under the adjacent paint coating, the rust remover will attack that rusty area as well. In my link above, there is a before and after shot of the jack base and you can see what it does to the rusty spots and the adjacent paint.

Brent, can you look at the wheels today on both cars? What are the date codes for the KR's? Can you list the date codes and the trim tag build date? Also, do you think the stems are original, or do you think they were replaced when the BFG's were put on?

My question is, should the stems be the short or long type? I know long is more convenient but something tells me the short stems are correct. I had a friend back in the day who always complained of having trouble getting the hose on the stem. He said it was because this was soon after the beauty rings had become standard equipment and the stems hadn't changed yet.

i don't have the original wheels on my 4spd i'm restoring, However i do have the original wheels on the survivor including the spare!! looks like the spare has been used but the realy kewl part is it still has the *original polyglas tire* on it :-)

not sure about decoding dates on wheels but it looks like its 12/30/70 (don't see too many 1970 KRs)

it seems every time we think we can put a stake in the ground on date code rules for some part someone pops up with an exception to that rule :-)

Maybe it's just me but I can't tell any difference between all the Rally II wheels - Is there a visual difference or is it all just in the date coding?

Great pictures of an original KR wheel! That charcoal color is the shade that I remember seeing on the Rally II's in the late 60's and early 70's. I've got old pictures of some of my early 70's Pontiacs with that shade of charcoal on their Rally Wheels. It is darker than the DDL 32947 that is out there today. Could it be that the DDL 32947 color superceded the original charcoal in later years and that number that has been in use ever since.

I think the run of 12/29/70 and 12/30/70 KRs was a large run. I see these dates on KRs more than any other. I have seen KRs dated as early as Oct '70. A few years ago I pulled three 12/29/70 KRs off of a '72 TA that was being parted. I don't know the build date of that car. I think there was also a run of KRs dated 12/28/70.

i couldn't tell the difference either until a friend pointed out the width between the inner and outer part of the rim. and ofcourse make sure its a 15x7

I have stenciles for the gas tank dates if anyone needs any. I don't know if the repo shops are carrying these yet, but had some made up last year. Just apply them and spray with black paint. Exactly original. I have 1970 and 1971 dates.. The guy who made these will make some for any date needed.. just PM me..
