What do you consider speeding? 56 in a 55...get real. Do you really see mangled/killed people every day !!

60 , do what we do in the big trucks when you see the grade ahead downshift a gear to build up horsepower and boost on the motor that way the engine will lug less and it will run cooler as its working easier ,

when I was taking the smith system of driving we where told to try to space out the distance , which is impossible to do as every idiot thinks that space is ment for them when they pass us , I don't haul light liquid or tight fill loads ( haul heavy alkalis and Acid s) , my loads only fill 1/2 to 3/4 of the tank and not baffled so hthey slosh in all dirrections , in a quick change of lanes I have to accellerate to push the product back to the back of the tank so it won't flip the truck over( also its part of the law of physics to change direction you have to accellerate in another direction) , in 20 years of hauling this stuff Ionly had one near rollover as the product wasn't moving right and it walked up the sides of the trailer and tried to flip it . I had the back tandem on the one side about 4 " off the pavement , I admit It was my fault for not paying attention to what was going on in front of me . but there is a reason they call it a limit , the sign dosen't say aproxamitely .

as for mangling people well 60 , I can try to send you some real nice accident pictures from cars and pick up towing trailers at slower speeds courtesy of several fire depts . they aren't pretty ,one I was shown I saw a nice car ( early 70's chevelle ) on top of the tow vehicle ( crew cab ford dually) , with the driver and passengers under it . tow straps ( 10K rated ) broke while the guy was trying to stop quickly from 45 mph trying to miss a deer . the car travelled thru the front of the enclosed trailer and stopped only after it took the cab roof off the truck .

If all of the traffic agencies in this country would teach the Smith system and people would follow it it would be like night and day with the difference it would make. Sadly that will never happen and the way that younger drivers will learn is by wrecking cars, and that the way they drive and what they were doing, they were learning by example of others that think they are the one and only on the road and everyone else has the duty to watch out for them.

The Smith system has 5 major components that they teach and if followed they will make you a much better, safer, driver, you don't have to be a Semi driver for them to apply either.

1) Aim high in steering.

2) Get the big picture.

3) Keep your eyes moving.

4) Leave yourself an out.

5) Make sure they see you.

If your looking for a Christmas gift for any driver, especially a newer recent one on your list one of their DVD s would make a great gift, it might even save their life at some point. A much better gift than most any thing else I can think of. The best part many people could watch it and become better drivers, parents, grand parents, other teens included. I learned the Smith System in HS drivers ed almost 30 years ago, although I had forgotten what it was called. It makes just as much sense now as it did then. Too bad most folks don't seem to use it.

Yeah....when I took those courses they were Defensive Driving..I am a safe driver...I sure as hell don't whip out in front of someone just to see them possibly loose control of their vehicle because I think they are speeding......very poor attitude..No tickets or accidents (my fault) since 16...lets see.....53 years ago !! I was at a dead stop and a teenager texting rammed me in the rear.....he was only going 55 too...sorry ..I couldn't resist..

Yes!

I grew up riding with my father, who at the time was a district mgr for a large insurance company. His job was to visit agents at their office, so it kept him on the road 5 days a week. He taught me the old school rules of the road.

Later, as a very young adult I drove for a Miller Beer dist, and their training, and the training from their insurance company mirrored what Dad had taught me, and the Smith system.

I drive looking (sometimes) as far ahead as I can see, but normally at least 3 to 5 cars in front of me. I drive looking in the mirror almost as much as I do looking out the windshield. Be aware of whats in front of you and coming up from behind and you will have very few surprises.

I feel almost blind when there is a van or large SUV in front of me because it limits my view. I want to be in control of what happens to me, so I know whats around me at all times.
