I think that comment is easier said then done. Once you put a bead on the intake it warps like crazy. It's a constant battle to keep the flanges straight as you massage the part into position. I have done sheet metal welding but never aluminum. I don't think I want to learn on this project.

Thanks to others that verified the deck height on the V block.

I guess my homemade hemi blower manifold could be called "sheet metal"; 3/8" aluminum sides/front/rear with 1/2" top and 1/4" bottom. Total cost was very low- I machined and formed the pieces and paid a local shop (not a race shop) to TIG it together. I provided him with a bare long block to use as a "jig". I only had to do minor milling of the flange and top surfaces after it was completed. I probably paid more to have it professionally polished than it cost to fabricate!

Hey Jack -

Yeah, a sheet metal intake is far easier to build then modifying a cast aluminum intake is what I understand, and it makes sense. I on the other hand am going for the vintage retro look and having a bunch of sharp angled pieces with raw welding beads at all the joints is not what I'm looking for.

So with that said, I gave the authorization today to move forward with the low rise dual quad intake. I will request pictures throughout the entire project and post them in the forum so everyone can see the progress in another thread out of respect for Don's project. It's already an all over the place topic, but a very interesting and informative mess we have here~!

... at that price range ($6500), have you considered having one made from 6061 Billet and would it be ok if it were a 2 piece design, like down the middle, front to back ??? ...

... and for a bit more money, we could probably make one for you out of an extremely high grade plastic that i have sourced for this purpose, but this material is very exspensive, but extremely lightweight, which obviously would not look factory ...

... and if the machining marks are something that would concern you, we can needle-scale the surface, and high pressure blast it afterwards, then we can paint it any color you like, then it will look very close to a cast type surface, we could also design a tapered/flange with a counter-sunk bolt, which would help hide the flange, but not completely ...

... now, if there were enough people to generate a "Pre-Order" list, then we could work on the price, as there would be a significant amount of CAD design for a piece like this, a preorder list would be able to spread the CAD costs over a certain amount of manifolds, lowering the price, depending on how many manifolds got pre-ordered ??? ...

... i would need a set of Don's bare castings just for "Reverse-Engineering" purposes, they would be returned as soon as that was completed ...

Thank you Twinturbo406 for the kind offer, but I just gave my commitment today and authorized a good flogging on my wallet with the premise that I will get back an intake that shall look as factory as the real deal. No seams. No weld marks. Bead blasted to have that pebble grain texture as if it was cast. To say the least, I'm a picky SOB and having a split down the middle of the intake is not something I want to play with, but thanks just the same.

Hey guys I think this is going to be another great accomplishment to the pontiac world yes my dad (nunzi)has both Intakes as far as lending them out he used to keep them under his bed when I was a little boy I am not kidding about that !! I will try to link the picture of the single plane dual quad off our tempest as the pic of the 428 dual plane dual quad is already posted. If anyone has any question please feel free to call him.
