Just got an estimate on a quad intake.
4500 to 6500 complete finish like it was a factory piece. My ass hurts.

I think that comment is easier said then done. Once you put a bead on the intake it warps like crazy. It's a constant battle to keep the flanges straight as you massage the part into position. I have done sheet metal welding but never aluminum. I don't think I want to learn on this project.

I guess my homemade hemi blower manifold could be called "sheet metal"; 3/8" aluminum sides/front/rear with 1/2" top and 1/4" bottom. Total cost was very low- I machined and formed the pieces and paid a local shop (not a race shop) to TIG it together. I provided him with a bare long block to use as a "jig". I only had to do minor milling of the flange and top surfaces after it was completed. I probably paid more to have it professionally polished than it cost to fabricate!

I have a 535 that will have a 8-71 on top of it. You asked why I or anybody would want a large chamber. If I use 85cc as the chamber volume, zero deck height and .041 gasket thickness, I would need a 50cc dish to get to 8.5:1 or keep the piston down in the hole. I don't like broken ring lands and would prefer a flat top piston or much smaller dish to achieve the desired compression. Maybe 85cc will be fine for a 400-462 but with a bigger cubic inch motor, it would be nice to have a larger chamber. On my old 474 I ran 6H heads (124cc) and I am currently building the 535 using 7F6 heads (111cc) and will run a thicker head gasket to get down to 9.5 with flat tops ( I bought the shortblock for a deal and it already had the flat tops in it). I know I am in the minority but I think there will be more 505-535 boosted Pontiacs running around soon and a larger chamber would be nice to have. I understand you have to make a business decision and appeal to the masses. Just my two cents

I would definitely consider making billet heads, but the cost for most would probably keep production low. I will cast my heads without water jackets for anyone wanting to run them in a boosted application. I'm not sure if there will be any advantage in running a billet head over a casting without water. I know Sonny Leonard uses the same foundry I do, and he has heads for blown applications that are castings not billet for that application. I do know that having the separate exhaust port layout definitely helps on a blown engine as well as nitrous.
Thanks for the input Bill. I can understand why someone might need a bigger chamber in some situations, but for the normally aspirated I think the smaller the chamber the better. We are casting the heads without a chamber and cnc'ing the chambers in. My head definitely has the room to put a bigger chamber in and I can do that. I don't think that the bigger chambers will be what the majority would like. So that is why I did not right a program for them, but it can be done no problem. I am going to offer a custom combustion chamber option for anyone wanting something other than what I will consider off the shelf heads like Ron H pointed out. I on the other hand am going for the vintage retro look and having a bunch of sharp angled pieces with raw welding beads at all the joints is not what I'm looking for. So with that said, I gave the authorization today to move forward with the low rise dual quad intake. I will request pictures throughout the entire project and post them in the forum so everyone can see the progress in another thread out of respect for Don's project. It's already an all over the place topic, but a very interesting and informative mess we have here~!

Keep us informed. I would be interested in seeing the progress on an intake.
May not be the best for under the hood clearance, but you can not beat the look of the factory tunnel ram vs. the factory low rise. (just incase Don is looking for votes for casting a factory 2x4 intake)

If I remember right,the factory single plane and dual plane intakes are same height to top of carbs.I owned one of the dual planes for a short time.Tom

Can not state Tom, never measured them.
Though, I do not remember the carb bases sitting much higher then the intake flange on the duel plane. 428RA4 – That is a factory tunnel ram in the picture. Just been coated and painted black too many times.
