Pulling the oil pan while in the car is a huge PITA, I did this once (albeit on a chev a-body) and it is way easier to pull the motor. The oil pump interferes with removal of the pan and then you'd have to be sure all the main seals were on right upon re-installation. Not sure if you'd have access to the hole in the block as it seems like this would be right over the crossmember. (you can see the hole on the bottom below the #3 main cap)
