I found several sellers on C-L who have R-12 for sale, some have several cases and I'm looking at buying quite a bit since I still run it in all my old cars.
One seller mentions "No rust" on the cans, unless the R-12 has leaked out what difference would that make, or should I look at cans without any rust at all ?

Good question... What's R-12 going for these days? I have many rust-free, new-looking 14 oz. cans, and wonder what they're worth.

I.ve using 409A in my 90 Bonneville for the last four years without a problem. They say to use non permeable hoses but I hav'vt had any problems. PT chart is very close to R-12. You have to buy it in 30 lb bottles though. Compatable with mineral oil too.

$20-40 per can. More if you buy a bunch, my problems was once the GV was converted to R134a it was not worth a damn, so it was switched back. They do seem to go fast, though -

You should have the EPA 609 license to purchase R-12. Makes it a lot easier, and it is easy and cheap to obtain the license.

I have come across some cans that have leaked out, yet the cans appear pristine. To make sure, just weigh them. Add a couple of ounces over the stated weight to compensate for the metal can.

What is wrong with the 14oz cans of R-12? I have several in a box still full. Price tags = $1.57.

Same. One of my 14oz cans is empty yet seems pristine.

Have not ran across redtek in my travels, will keep my eyes open for it. Fortunately, I stocked up on R12 many years ago, still have a bunch, no empty cans. After having my A/C system serviced in my home earlier this year, should have years ago bought a 30lb bottle of R22

Just to make sure I understand: It shows the mass comparison of 33% compared to R12. So if my system calls for 3.25 lbs (52 oz) then I would use 17 oz of redtek?

They sell the replacement for R-12 at several locations. I see them on ebay and at the Pomona Swap Meet, which I will be going to on Sunday.

Many of these are flamamble gas that is under pressure. Probably fine in a closed system, but add a fender bender to the mix and maybe not as healthy.

Ammonia gas is also and excellent refrigerant and is used in many cold storage facilities. That does not make it a good replacement for sytems that were designed to use a gas that can be expanded and compressed without changing the composition. Ammonia gas is also very alkaline. Imagine Ammonia gas in a fender bender and you get the idea.

All I'm saying is add an ignition source and some of these gases want to oxidate (start a fire). The MSDS is not always helpful, but this one is. I would ask questions before using.

R-12 is not illegal to own or sell. I just bought some 12-14 oz cans. OP is right about looking for the larger cans that may be available at the same cost as the 12 oz ones.

This is just one man's opinion. Also, at 30 bucks a can, it's only twice as expensive as the 134 is going for nowadays.

OK, I was going by memory and butane/propane mix seems right.

Anyway there's a reason that an inert gas is used as the refrigerant in automobiles.

I don't have any and don't need any R-12. I was just adding that the substitute could be flammable and to be careful with it.

Now that this thread has been linked by a clubhouse troll to an EPA enforcement post there, I wish I would have passed on posting any reply.

Unless you demand that your system freeze you, there's nothing that I've found lacking about a 134 conversion. Three years ago, I simply evacuated my '71 lemans' system, added ONE fitting, then recharged the system with R134a, a type that says compatible with r12 residue. Since then I've been comfortable even in the hottest St Louis area weather. Yes, it takes a while longer to cool but I attribute that to a possibly faulty orifice tube (filter), but once it's been running for a few miles, I can't even keep it on high. It gets super cold.

I've also found that R12 is available for a LOT less than twenty dollars a can.

I think the demand of R-12 has lessened, so the price has come down a bit. I have been consistently buying the small 12-16 oz. cans for 15-20 bucks a pop. I purchased several cans at both Carlisles I attended this year. Around here, R-134A is selling for 10-15 bucks a 12 oz. can, so not much cost difference there, and R-12 is the preferred refrigerant in the cars it was designed for.
