This is definitely good to know. I'm hoping to acquire a second scoop so I can open it up, this should eliminate painting it black

Better yet it lets more air in. But also bugs and water and dirt and..... LOL

True, but I'm not too concerned, maybe I can fab up a mechanical, or vacuum flapper lol

The inserts were black. 30 years ago I was lucky enough to buy 2 NOS replacement scoops. These service parts were red primer with the grille portion painted flat black. The flat black portion was then masked off by the manufacturer. So just like I'm sure they did at the factory, after you painted the rest of it body color all you had to do was remove the masking tape.
