The Daytona and Superbird wings have multi purposes for the wings. They create downforce at speed, and if your dryer breaks down you can dry your clothes on them.............................................. ....

That was the local joke when they were seen on the street in the early 70s, the owners somehow never thought it was funny though.............

...the Daytona with the laundry hanging on the wing was my car from 1980 until 1988..I purchased it from the original owner in 1980 w/10k actual miles...it was F6 Bright Green w/white interior, 440 4-spd...I sold it to Mason Dixon, a disc jockey in Tampa, in 1988 and it was photographed for Muscle Car Review by Greg Rager in 1989...my wife actually did hang blankets etc on the wing to air dry....

...the Daytona with the people sitting on the wing was originally the same F6 Bright Green w/black interior and later painted like the Hot Wheels toy Daytona, white w/red and blue stars and stripes...it was owned by my friend and neighbor ( not the people in the pix ) just a few houses down the street from me...the cars were neighbors so to speak

the one with the clothing is now in Cleveland Oh and has 26K actual miles, 200 more than when I sold it 25 years ago...the other one is still wearing the custom paint and is somewhere in Iowa, Nebraska or some state nearby

...I have owned this Daytona twice...purchased it from the original owner in 1989 w/6,400 actual miles...it is the first Daytona shipped in the USA, one of 3 known documented "dealer installed" 440 6-PACKS...purchased it again 6 years ago, it has 9,500 miles now

...and this is "Project Blackbird", a Phantom Superbird convertible (none were built by Chrysler)...finished 2 years ago

...built from a 1970 Road Runner conv...we installed a new 426 HEMI and a Tremec 6-spd...built as an everyday driver

Another bit of trivia was the fact that Superbirds were illegal in the state of Maryland due to the fact they did not have a front bumper. Chrysler purchased all the Superbirds back from dealers and owners and resold them in Florida.

More trivia : Daytonas and Superbirds came with two different jacks in the trunk; a scissor style for the front and a bumper jack for the rear.

...having owned various Winged Cars for 35 years, I still find them to be one of the more interesting stories of the Muscle Car era...not always popular, sometimes laughed at, mostly misunderstood, but a truly unique automobile
