That looks like correct style. I would love to zoom in on about the 1 o'clock position and see if that is casting number 3993560. Looks like it probably is.

Edit: I saved off a copy of your picture and zoomed in and rotated it 180 degrees and that does seem to be the casting number all right. Tell me if you disagree.

That's the casting number on the outside of the drum. Often, but not always, different than the part number.

Consider something like the water pump for the 1971. Assembly part number is 9790522. But it's made up of several individual parts. Impeller, shaft, bearings, seals and the main housing. The main housing might have a casting number like 482138, but if you try to use that number to look it up you typically won't get anything.

One of the more extreme examples is a carb. We might know it as part number 7041267, but it is made up of a few individual castings, jets, float, etc.. Actual stocking part number would be different than that.

You get the idea. I just didn't want you chasing your tail any more than any of us might usually do. Part numbers can refer to one or more casting numbers. In the case of the brake drums it is a one to one relationship.

Oh, and if Lloyd or someone refers to their MPC they might come up with a drum part number for 1970 and 1971 of 3841176. So you might be inclined to think that must be the part number for the 3993560 casting number. Unfortunately, not the case as the part number 3841176 has a casting number of 3841177 as seen here - and that is a pretty penny for each rear drum.

Here's four of hundreds of small NOS parts I bought at the dealership that my Uncle Kenny worked at. These are dated 4/02/78.

Part number is

479854 10.240 All F SCREW, escutcheon to shift bracket. (8-18 x 4 1970 1972)

No box, but the picking tag has the part number and group clearly shown. You can see I have always been a bit detail oriented like all of you and loved Trans Ams. Even at this time they were likely bringing stuff in for me from other places since they rarely had things like this in stock.

Nobody else has talked about these by part number other than a thread started by me in 2009 and no pictures from then so I thought I would at least post some pictures of these even though they are not assembly line correct numbers as Ric confirmed for me before. Only so much was available even by the time I was buying bits and pieces.

And that answers why these are so tight on the 7/8" diameter shafts.

I've always puzzled over what the finish was on those screws. Seems like even the tiniest amount of humidity would start them rusting. Have just been painting them with a fairly flat black paint as a better than nothing fix. Any ideas on the finish?
