They were on all manual and autos v8's. They were used to control the dieseling that are prone to carbs running at higher rpms or ones that run leaner. They are anti- dieseling devices. When you turn the car off it deenergizes the solenoid dropping the rpms lower.

Thank you for the answer. I pretty much came to that conclusion after working/studying it over the weekend. You confirmed it for me.
