I used to run this engine combo in another 80 Trans Am starting in 2009.That car had 3.42 gears. This thread and another one 3.08 vs 3.42's documents some of the changes and track experience over a few years. The head/cam package is what is really special thanks to Dave and Marcel at the time at SD and my wife..thats another story.Much of the tuning has been by following threads and taking advice from PY members.Jim Hand's influence is seen in this car also...X pipe exhaust, cone exhaust reducers, freeflowing mufflers,Continental Convertor, mild gearing, mild street manners, idles at 850 rpm and runs on 87 octane. The current shortblock has also been in service since 2009 and is just a basic rebuild with heavy TRW's,prepped cast rods and a factory crank.I've always enjoyed and learned from others relating their tuning changes and procedures and hopefully I can help others too.

I had no idea that we are basically running the same shortblock. I have a 1970 455, factory crank, cast rods resized with arp bolts, and heavy TRW pistons. Are the valve angles similar on your heads compared to an 87cc E head? Ive been skeptical on going with more lift with mine due to PTV clearance but it sounds like I may be fine doing it. What mufflers are you running also? I have 3 inch flowmaster super 44's now with a 3 inch x pipe. Converter is about to happen once my car is dynoed.

I'm not sure on the valve angles..more lift is nice if the heads are set up for it.I'm in the .650 lift range. My mufflers are 2.5 inch Walker Dynomax Ultraflows with a 3 inch to 2.5 cone reducers.Even though they are 2.5 inch they are a really good flowing muffler.I will be eventually changing my exhaust..to either a full 3.5 to 3 inch tails...or putting my 2.5 inch tailpipes back on and running some cutouts up front for track days.

I may check ptv clearance and order some 1.65 rockers to increase my lift. I only have 520/540 lift now. I've been debating on taking my tailpipes off before the axle as well. I have 3.5 inch collectors into a 3 inch x pipe with 3 inch pipe all the way to the back. I have my performer rpm off now and I did a complete port job on it - still going to get a single plane to test back to back at the track next year once my converter is in.

Your exhaust should be fine..Torquewar (Andy) runs the same as I do and his exhaust doesn't seem to pose a restriction. He has full 3 inch.My tailpipes were only 2.5 inches and even though they were mandrel bent did cause a restriction. On the other hand it is a cheap test to do!
Do you have flow sheets for your heads?

I run those same mufflers and even though the bushings are 2.5 the core is 3". Seeing the improvement from removing the tailpipes on the TA I'm probably going to have the bushings bumped to 3" and run some 3" tailpipes.

Good plan..they do flow well!I've had these mufflers for years...they were first put on my old Trans Am when it was running 14's..just on a basic 455 build..by replacing the stock 2 1/4" inch tailpipes with 2.5 inch tailpipes and the Ultraflows..it picked up 3 tenths..They have to be 14 years old!

Ultraflows are really good mufflers. Fairly quiet also. My 78 TA ran identical time/mph open headers to 3" Dr. Gas X pipe, 3" Ultraflows and 3" torque Tech tailpipes even with the extra weight of the system. Open header runs had no system behind it on the car at all.

Can't give u an exact rpm or distance...at the stripe I think I'm at a little over 5000rpm on the factory tach..I have no clue where I go into drive?Maybe 1/8 th mile...I focus on the tree and launch, check the tach shift, check the tach shift...watch for the pylons a the stripe and make sure I don't let up till thru..If I do a little math I could figure out where I go into drive...at 660ft 98 mph with a 3.08 gear and 28 tire..

Cutouts would be convenient. You could add cutouts to your present system, possibly. The largest size cutouts I've seen are 3", are they large enough for your purpose?

451 BUDGET combo that would be Killer IMHO
455 block, 4.211 bore, 421/428 crank, offset ground to 4.04" use 6.700" Scat Pro Comp Light Weight I-beams with ARP 2000 bolts
Icon 455 pistons, 1.5 Compression Distance, skinny rings
Zero deck at 10.22 deck height but chop another. 003 off to get quench to 036 with blue Felpro gaskets
11.3:1 Comp ratio. Pump gas, 91-92 octane
I would use a Street Solid Roller 248-252 at .050
.650 lift 114 lsa 112ilc, Bullet Lobes LS Firing order.
SD 315 cnc Aluminum D-port heads with a Fully Ported T2 Intake And 1000hp carb
1-7/8 headers
4200 continental converter with 3.42-3.55 gears and a 400 trans
Make about 645hp at 6400rpm and 600tq at 4900 rpm run low to mid tens on pump gas with very good drivability
It's Pretty budget friendly and would be a beast, message me about your current combo if you like, sorry for the high jack !

What is the cost for a standard cam with the ls firing order? Why go that route?
What are skinny rings to you?

Okay good deal. I do have some flow sheets. I will try to post them up once I find them in my phone. They flow around 290 cfm at 550 lift and 305 cfm at 700 lift. They just have the entrances opened up to a 2.3x1.2 port and blended in about two inches and the bowls have been cleaned up, and chambers polished. The runners havent had any porting done to them. I just bought a Northwind intake so I will be porting it out completely and matching it to my heads.

Your HP is 575 computed from your vehicle weight of 3710 pounds and 123.6 MPH.

It's to bad they don't have the Pontiac Southern Nationals down here anymore at the Texas Motorplex you would have loved it.

Keep on rocking, good job.
