tooski,

I'm sending the oil pump and distributor to Paul. I spoke to him today and he suggested that I do that. I trust Paul 100% and I know he wants this whole situation taken care of. I know he wants this motor right as much as I do. I can't tell you guys enough how great Paul has been. I know he's not use to having this happen to one of his motors but I still don't regret for one second going through him for the motor. He's a true professional and stands by his builds! I'll keep you guys updated.

Do the oil and filter inspection.

If you pull the engine (and I would) Drop the pan and windage tray before you flip the engine over.

Take pictures to document what you find.

Inspect for anything that could be bumping/rubbing/touching with the crank and rods. Check crank end play.

If the engine needs/has to go back....Sending pump and distributor is just delaying the inevitable.

If you find more flakes and metalic looking gunk AND the filter bypass is still functional....Chances are the stuff has been pumped through eveything in the engine. Tiny stuff will damage bearings and mess up hydraulic lifters making the plungers not hold. Valve train parts, including lifters, have done been changed trying to stop the tapping noises you can hear from the top. If gunk is getting pumped through the oil...replacement lifters would tap like the originals.

Still thinking what you can hear from the top ain't the same as what you hear from the bottom. Two different things going on and one may be causing the other.

Some more inspecting needed done first time the pan was off. If Paul doesn't see stuff in pics, post and ask here.

Clay

Not that I have any say, but if I had a vote I would recommend sending it to Paul, he more than deserves an award for his unwavering support through this challenge!

STEELCITYFIREBIRD,

You make a good point because everyone here is a potential customer but at this point, I think I'll let Paul discuss that if he wants to. I'm in a pretty awkward position because I've spent a lot of money on a motor that has less than 200 miles on it and it's almost 2000 miles away from me.

Have you approached MSD? Their product seems to be the source of your problems, not the engine builder. He seems to be taking excellent care of you.

Good luck with that one.

OP is lucky they even repaired the distributor since it was modified (composite gear added). Every product that comes with a limited warranty excludes consequential damages and covers only the product purchased. That's why it is called a limited warranty.

Here are the terms of MSD's stated warranty:

"MSD, LLC warrants MSD products to be free from defects in material and workmanship under normal use and if properly installed for a period of one year from date of purchase. If found to be defective as mentioned above, it will be replaced or repaired if returned prepaid along with proof of date of purchase. This shall constitute the sole remedy of the purchaser and the sole liability of MSD, LLC to the extent permitted by law, the foregoing is exclusive and in lieu of all other warranties or representations whether expressed or implied, including any implied warranty of merchantability or fitness. In no event shall MSD, LLC be liable for special or consequential damages. This warranty is only valid on products purchased from MSD Authorized Dealers."

It's already been stated MSD took care of the distributor. Paul and Jeff have a little more pull than the typical consumer since they build some of the best South West Tour series engines out here, and use MSD products exclusively. That's part of the advantage of having a reputable engine shop build an engine for you. If it were Joe blow calling MSD about the issue, they'd tell ya tough luck.

It was a distributor issue plain and simple. Not a builders issue. Best to just roll with the punches, follow Paul and Jeff's advice, button the thing up and enjoy it.

My point was that if he wants to bitch about it he should be bitching about the parts he got from MSD, not the builder.

mgarblik,

I think Paul would agree that I have been appreciative and understanding. I've never posted one negative thing on this forum. It's been a long, bumpy road to get to this point with a lot of up and downs. We just need to get through this so I can enjoy this motor and Paul and Jeff can get that motor out of the shop so they don't have to deal with it anymore.

I have no reason to doubt anything you say concerning your last post. I have been following this from the beginning and look forward to a happy end to the saga. Good luck with your car and engine. Summer is coming. Get some enjoyment out of it.

promptcritical,
Hahaha..I'm not going down that path.

mgarblik,
This filter was suggested by a lot of guys here. That's why I went with it. I've tried googling problems with this distributor and didn't see much of the same problem. Of course I'm pretty new to cars and I certainly don't have the experience or knowledge to even have a thought on this. I know I'm learning a lot though!

Formulajones,
I don't know about the bypass. I know I've changed the oil 3 times with less than 200 miles.

I have no idea what you’re talking about. I apologized plain and simple for the way my post came across. Good luck with your deal...you’ll be up and running soon.
