Is what kids could afford a decade ago, particularly on the Left coast which got Japanese imports since the '60s. JDM is what happened when some found that the really fast ones were not imported.

Another factor was that in the 80s and into the 90s, import cars were faster than US cars particularly for canyon carving. For those who could not afford Porches JDM was close. And then drifting (a drift race is an oxymoron) became popular.

So just a counter-culture.

Do you mean cars like NISSAN GT-R Nismo and NISSAN GT-R ??
