I guess classic imports are doing well...although I'm not really knowledgeable about what is considered classic/desireable in that market. Having never owned either of these, I can't seem to fathom.

Both nice cars, I would rank the prelude higher on the desirability scale but this shows what I know! Personally I would not spend more than about 2k on either one but then again they're way down the list of cars I would want to own. The Japanese import market is strong and getting stronger. These are the cars that are going to explode in value in a few years. Might be too late to get into the game with a good deal.

The AE86 Toyota is one of the most desirable and collectible Japanese cars there is. It was the last rear wheel drive version of the Corolla, was very popular in racing on the track, and was the car at the beginning of the drifting movement in Japan. The twin cam engine is still used in a number of dedicated road racing cars. I wouldn't be surprised if that car went back to a collector in Japan.

I just saw an episode with Dennis Gage. He was with a toyota collector in Puerto Rico. The collection was incredible, had just about one of every model made. And quite an impressive building.

We bought a 1984 Prelude new (to replace a really crappy 1982 Olds Ciera) and it was an excellent car!

Times were different then and "performance" was not the same as it had been (or would be!). That being said, you could sling that Prelude into any corner you had the talent to handle and it would stick like glue. It was just a fun car to drive with excellent build quality and reliability.

Is what kids could afford a decade ago, particularly on the Left coast which got Japanese imports since the '60s. JDM is what happened when some found that the really fast ones were not imported.

Another factor was that in the 80s and into the 90s, import cars were faster than US cars particularly for canyon carving. For those who could not afford Porches JDM was close. And then drifting (a drift race is an oxymoron) became popular.

So just a counter-culture.

Do you mean cars like NISSAN GT-R Nismo and NISSAN GT-R ??

Got my eye on an R34 Skyline. It's the next vehicle I'm working towards. It seems like every day I need to save more, as they're skyrocketing in price. lol
