Lower shift boot to be more specific.
So it's lower shift boot > lower shift boot bezel > carpet > upper shift boot > upper shift boot bezel. Or at least that's how many are configured. Pick one: https://www.google.com/search?sca_es...h=750&dpr=1.25 Hopefully you used some seal sealer or other to seal the shifter hump (porch) to the floor pan. .

I have a shift boot with a chrome ring to go on top of the carpet for the shifter to come thru. Are you saying I need two rubber boots?

You can use a single boot and plate. You place the boot under the carpet and seal it to the tunnel with weatherstrip adhesive then clamp the carpet between the boot and cover plate.

It might be ok if you are using a console, but non-console cars it's best to do both the lower & upper setups. .

Yeah, if using a universal fit shift boot and flat trim ring like they sell at Autozone, the carpet edge can show unless you carefully cut the carpet right along the line of the screw holes so the screws hold the carpet edge back. Agree that you will distort the trim by tightening.
The '64-65 used an upper and lower boot and a flanged trim ring. The upper "nested into the lower on console cars. Only the lower boot was used for non-console cars. Here's a couple pics of a '71. They simplified it by forming the boot with an upper and lower sealing flange. One goes below the carpet, one above with the trim plate retaining it. As you can see, you can install the trim ring on top of the carpet as the flanges hide the edge of the carpet. Pontiac used the '64 lower boot only on non-console cars. The factory ring is flanged so the carpet can be hidden behind the edge of the trim ring.

I’ll post some pics when I get to the shifter part but this isn’t gonna be as simple as a factory boot. The bolts for the shifter are above the hump on the TKO and I can’t use factory boots

Didn’t get around to putting the door panels on cause of unexpected busy weekend but got some other stuff done but I’m getting bummed out and frustrated. Somewhere between the blown up engine and this one my floats got messed up. I just noticed today that they were way too high because I checked my oil and it was diluted BAD. Lowered the floats and the regulator PSI and now it runs even better than it did but I gotta change the oil before driving it again and the damn belt still squeals. It doesn’t do it when it is turning or stopping (hydroboost) anymore but if you rev it it’s LOUD. Also it has a weird smoke ring thing going on after I shut it off for a few seconds. Never seen that before. Just getting kinda frustrated.

Anytime you mix in an assortment of aftermarket parts, you're going to wind up re-engineering things. You'll spend a year just shaking things out to where you can be confident it all works as planned. It ain't like on TV when they turn the key and ride off into the sunset. It took 2 brake boosters, 8 calipers, 5 master cylinders and 3 proportioning valves over 5 years before the brakes on the car actually performed properly. If you're a perfectionist, it's even worse. I can't stand anything that looks like it was hacked or home-built on my car. When I get frustrated, I just close the garage door and walk away until I shake those blues and feel like taking another stab at it.

Well I’m getting close to the end of the major work. If my wife feels like it today we will be putting carpet in and then I will have to set aside some money to get someone to do the headliner but other than that I only have small issues to iron out. I’ve put 731 miles on it since getting the new engine in and it seems good so…keep wishing me luck.

I put valve cover gaskets on and it stopped some of the leak but I am still getting little spots and I cannot for the life of me find it. I am nowhere near time for an oil change. Can I put dye in now and drive with it till oil change or do I have to wait till right before an oil change?
