I waited to reply, because I figured someone "in the know" would speak up;
I am sure they are out there, but it appears as though Ames doesn't offer this part by it self; Ames offers both black (#FT101P) and red (#FT102P) 'original clip design' center cap assemblies; The picture in their catalog clearly shows the original style backing on these cap assemblies. I did look in the Classic Industries catalog, and they don't even offer the 'original clip design' caps what so ever. Personally, I have been buying ugly-OE 1973-1975(?) caps, and pulling the 'backing plates' off to use in OE-PMD caps.

GM number for just the spring clip was 9792997, superseded to 480303 sometime between 70-72. You may find some NOS searching with those #'s.

I bought correct style nos for my 70. But I seen 2 types on repop, I'm not sure if they are exactly the same (repos) as nos. Probably finding an old set and reusing the backs or getting nos is my suggestion.
