I normally pre-fill the filters as well. Just habit. I didn't on the first fill because I was going to prime it anyway. Don't know if it makes any difference or not. Most modern cars have canister style filters on the very top of the engine. So no way to pre-fill them. I was surprised the pan was pumped mostly dry with a 5 quart fill.

There was a thread here, years ago about pre-filling or not pre-filling filters. Was WAY too long winded.
I don't understand how prefilling an oil filter could EVER be a bad thing. The first place oil is pumped to is the filter!!! Having a full filter upon startup could only be a good thing...

Usually about 6qts with a new filter.

If you ever use 10w40 oil make sure to get engine to full operating temp before any meaningful revs.
Those 80lb pumps can blow a filter loose with ambient temp 40w and a crack of the secondaries.
I did that once .
Went right back to 10w30.
