each piece should have a casting number;
A casting number is cast into the part - as opposed to application numbers being roll stamped onto a part of the assembly. I believe all early (pre-1968) carbs had tags instead of stamped application numbers. I am not too sure if the 2bbl carbs had a tag attached to a main body screw or not - but I believe that's how I've seen most. People really in the know will be able to place with in a window of time based on the casting number(s) - as GM assigned them sequentially.
