Yeah, really...He does look kinda young...They each had a caption/description under the photo which explained what they were doing...Some (I think it was the '67 Bonnies) were being inspected or repaired, IIRC...

Yeah, really...He does look kinda young...They each had a caption/description under the photo which explained what they were doing...Some (I think it was the '67 Bonnies) were being inspected or repaired, IIRC...

[Old Blue 66]

The pic with the blue 66 GTO says it all. Look closely at all the Pontiacs in the backround.

Imagine if they posted the partial VIN of cars in these pics and yours was on there??? You could really say you new the history of your car from its build/assembly...Keith, if you can, please post some of yours again here....Thanx.

I haven't said much about it here (because it's Chevy related) but I followed both my '80 pickup and my '87 pickup down the line as they were built.

For the '87, I got to the plant as it was coming down out of paint into trim; followed the body all the way through trim (on the second floor), then hopped downstairs and followed the engine build, through motor set to body drop, then followed the rest of the way down the final line.

It got written up for "low A/C charge" (it was fine but they were being nice; they wanted to hit it again to make sure it had a really good charge) and "back up lights inop". They fixed the back up lights and I bought off on the A/C charge because I didn't want them fooling with it.

I drove it off the end of the line myself and over to the shipping building. I told "Lloyd" (the supervisor in the shipping building): "hey, Lloyd, that's my truck". Left the plant at about 1 in the morning and by 5 pm that same day it was sitting in the dealership parking lot.



I won't defile this thread by posting pictures here, but you can see it new, as returned to me in March of '09, and as it sits today in my "Intro from an old Assembly Plant Guy" thread linked below.

Yes I remember that story...I believe you mentioned it in another thread (about your truck and following thru the assembly line)...Must have been neat to see...

As for the pics, I believe they were others...maybe not you who posted them after all, but in same thread you had described your truck among other things...hopefully others will chime in with new pics...Did u just get the ones you put up from HPP or were these older? Love the way that guy is handling the engine with a tie on??? Must be a publicity pic...LOL!

He's probably not an hourly employee; he's likely the supervisor for that area. Evidently he is trying to (quickly) make a repair that both the operator and the repair person missed, possibly because they were not familiar with the "new" content.

Anytime you see "neckties" working on the line that means something is very wrong!

man those are cool pictures, had to save the one with the blue 66! just curious, the pics got me wondering, i know a guy who has a 66 tempest in arkansas built in kansas same place my lemans started out, he said buy looking up the numbers he was able to determine that his car would have been built either 1 car ahead/or behind mine. is that possible to find out?

Not necessarily. I'm not convinced all the plants built in VIN order.

They definitely would have been "grouped" (ie, for the most part VINs that were close would have been nearby) but not necessarily one right after the other.

Additionally, for plants that built multiple models and nameplates (ie, Chevy, Pont, Olds) those models and nameplates usually have a different VIN prefix and (potentially) serial number sequence - so - you wouldn't know if your car was immediately followed by an Olds or Chevy and then his car (for example).

Cool pictures! About two years ago I drove my 68 Bonneville wagon to the election polls. One of the campaign workers, 70 yr old woman, came over quickly and identified the car to the year and options. She worked for GM in Arlington, TX for three years. She was upset to the change of the union. Back in the day she told a story of how another worker that worked on the line had a heart attack and sat on the still moving line until break an hour later. Unfortunately he later died. Big difference from today where you cant even change your own light bulb and the line stops for any safety issue! She said she installed headliners.
