That's it. The torque converter.
Dyno the motor, look at the torque characteristics and have a custom converter made specificaly for your combination. "Knowing where the engine produces peak torque and the relative "shape" of the curve over the planned range of rpm provides further important input to converter choice and characteristics." AHAH: here's a heartbreaker:
how about a DYNO that includes the Transmission output shaft? Hmmm, engine, clutch/converter, Trans holding drive, some windage. Inquiring minds wanna know H.I. That's why you race on a dragstrip.
Dyno numbers don't win races. Even with a dyno hooked to the tranny output shaft,it still does no good if you don't get the power to the ground. johnta1 Pontiac Power RULES !!! www.wallaceracing.com

Suppose the real valve is matching the Engine's torque curve to the converter's torque transfer profile vs RPM...very,very big value.
Need the Transmission to best couple to the converter. Think this basket of worms gets worse since the converter's primary value is at low driveshaft RPMs. Geez, with a Trans-friendly dyno, you could theretically optimize your 1/4 mile run on the dyno curve sheet for most area under the curve. Sooo, I would boldy suggest that present engine-only dyno-runs only helps directly with mid-to-top of the track. Subtle, casual or accidental help with 60foot to 660foot. H.I. Yesh, it's always about power to the pavement.
Since I'm going clutch-auto, getting worried about ever getting an easy 60foot. "11.00/123MPH/1.50 60foot/29.5"/4.10:1/10"/472 #48/Flat HYD/DualQuad/Wenzler/3250Lbs 12.00/112MPH/1.61 60foot/26"/3.31:1/10"/472 #48/FlatHYD/Q-Jet/Torker/3650Lbs"

Sure it would help quite a bit.Optimizing the torque converter to the engine parameters makes a world of difference in the performance of the car. With the same amount of torque and hp from the engine, there is a large difference in ET with the wrong converter setup.
The problem with most dynos are that they are basically steady state. They hold steady at a certain rpm range, take a reading then go to next. With the tranny hooked up you would basically be bypassing the converter at a steady reading. Thereby negating the torgue multiplication of the converter. Badbird68, Is that a custom hood on your car? If so, could you give out some details about it?

Bailey, lets switch, Ill take your motor and you take mine. . I dont think even on the spray that mine will keep up with you. Maybe with a 300 or 400 shot, but that would only be one run until it blew up . Going to spray it after one more time at the track to do some more tuning. Might try warrior first.
