I'm looking for a '69 and was wondering about dash caps vs. a refinished dash from Just Dashes. From what I recall from my first '69 LeMans, it would be hard to get a good glue job around the gauges and AC vent. Granted mine`s a 68 and not a 69 but it still goes around the center ac vent and side ac vents.I`m a perfectionist myself and I`m telling you that a good quality dashcap is hard to tell from an original accept for being hard plastic instead of soft.I would do it again before I spent $500.00 for one from Just Dashes.Here`s some pics of my so-called crappy looking one.

I will get you guys a pic of my "crappy one" too. I will be installing one on my 69 GTO Conv next (no A/C). The extra 500.00 will go elsewhere! Nice 68 BTW

I got my cover from PY last year and I am just now getting to the point of installing it. I figured that it was a driver and not a show car, so I thought I would give it a try. If it turns out crappy, then we will have to see what's next. I see where I am really going to have to apply pressure while the sealant is drying, but I have heard that I should not use the tube of glue that came with it.
Anyone else use a different glue than was supplied? If so, what was used. I will hopefully have good pics when I am done. As a side note, I am changing the interior color from green to black. The dash cover did not match the color of the "dye" I got for the glovebox door etc., so I am painting the cover as well to match. I hope that it is not too glossy and glare prone. Dain

Bill- You'll have to tell us how you like the Just Dashes restoration. I had a 1970 dash done by them several years ago, and to be honest, it wasn't what I expected. The radii on some of the edges seemed to have become more washed out than on the originals, and there were other small details that I immediately picked out.
After going both routes, my thought is that a PROPERLY and CAREFULLY instaled dash cap is every bit equivalent to the work done by Just Dashes. They both have their issues, and I really can't say that one's quality is noticably different than the other. And, when you're saving $600-plus, that can buy a lot of "understanding" when it comes to minor details. This is particularly true when those same areas exhibit different, but equally annoying, issues on the high-dollar restoration from Just Dashes. |

gr8dain, Just get a bunch of old phone books, or any other soft bound heavy, large book, and pile them on top , nice & even, snug. Let the silicone/glue cure overnight (or longer is possible) before removing books.

All this talk about caps has caught my interest. I have a core and my car came with a new cap uninstalled in the box. I think I'll put them together and see how it works - there's lots of good info here. My thought on it is that if the cap is tight you can easily file or cut away some of the core to ensure a good fit. Just don't get carried away

I have had a "Nu dash" cap on my 69 GTO for the past three years, and I have had no problems. As a matter of fact, you have to look real hard to see that it's a cap, because I took my time when I installed it. I drive my car...it's not a Trailer Queen...if it was a Trailer Queen, then I'd spend the $700 bucks to send it to Just Dashes.
Throw away that clear sealant glue that comes with the cap, and get some 3M seal adhesive (I used the yellow stuff)...make sure you have resored all of your bezels first, and you may have to do a little trimming around the glove box door to get a proper fit. Apply a bead of the sealer about 1/4 inch away from edges so that the sealant will reach the edges, but not spurt out all over the place, lest you have a great mess to clean up. The advantage of a dash cap is you don't get those nasty finger impressions in your padded dash from frightened passengers when you are doing 130 MPH on the highway...but then again...Trailer Queens can't see the highway from under the covers... Perhaps in 10 years I'll spring for the restored dash when I'm tired of driving the old girl...if that ever happens. |

As previously stated I'm not a fan of the phoney dash caps for a 69 ,especially one with Air. Just wondering--Are you happy with it or do you wish that you did it right to start with??

JMHO...
I've seen the '70s and the '69s. The '70 piece was more convincing, but still noticable. The '69 I refused to use. Again, considering dollar amount, I can see where there would be cases where the cap is "good enough", but definately a situation where you truly get what you pay for. 'Nuff said. I'll see if I can locate my '69 piece, and if someone would like to pay shipping, you are welcome to try it. If you like it, just send me the balance, which would be a fraction of original cost. not to hijack but how about 68s?
 Quick question, as I saw a 68 posted here...By dash caps, are you guys refering to the Repro Pads sold by Ames for example? Mine is Non-ac...and for a driver, I do not see buying a used one for up to 500 as I have seen advertised....Thank you. |

Pontiac die hards may notice, but 90% of the rest of the world won't. I put one on my 69 and it looked great. spent the other $500.00 they wanted for the dash restoration on other parts i needed. Also i didn't like the down time until i got the restored dash back. I sanded the cracks on my old dash to remove the hi spots and filled it with the same repair stuff i used on the endura nose. then cleaned and installed. I thought it looked decent for a driver .
