That Burgundy Maroon has been my 1968 favorite since I bought a Burgundy/black 68LeMans at age 14. Had 2 Burgundy 68 GTOs since. You photos show the color intensity nicely. Departure: my 68GTO project is original Starlight Black...been pondering if it will be as-nice or nicer than the Burgundy. Pretty convinced those are the 2 nicest colors for 68 GTO. Then only the Atoll blue and Orbit Orange can one-up these colors provided they lay on a 70 or 69GTO.  HIS

My '69 Femont built car (which has been in the family since '70) has large chalk marks on the firewall to the right of the heater box...if memory serves (becasue I'm too lazy to walk out to the garage and uncover it) it is 242...but it is hard to read.

Thanks Guys, My buddy came up with a theory to what the marks could mean. The V above the air cutout is to tell the workers to cutout for air conditioning. The r is that it was made on a Thursday. What looks like the letter B with two lines running through it is actually a 13 with two lines running through it. Meaning that is was made on the 13th. The two lines could mean that it was done on the second shift. The MAR below means that is was made in March. My VIN says it was made in the third week March.
What do you guys think of his theory? I think he may have figured it out. I guess only a factory worker in 1968 would be the only one who would know for sure. I wonder how to find one if there are any still alive.  Here is a better pic after I rechalked it. |

Nice thought process there, Johnny. And you might be correct, no one will likely know for sure.
Myself, I would have a hard time believing that they would mark the firewall with the day/date. There would be no logical reason to do that. I dont recall ever having found a firewall marking correlating to a build date myself. For the most part, the markings had a meaning or some sort of reasoning behind them. That being said, Ive found a marking that looked like a game of "hangman" was played on the firewall, maybe just killing time, so who knows. Well, you asked for an opinion  dave

Good a guess as any I guess...except that the 13th is not in the third week.
 I'm not clear where he got that the "r" means Thursday either. The rest sounds reasonable. Look and see what day the 13th of March fell on in 1968.
