As far as the PMD center caps go, anything after January of 1970 had red center caps. Last edited by Uncle Judge; 12-06-2007 at 02:35 PM. |

Jeff - on his April built T/A, wouldn't Van Nuys have run out of KN's by that time?

I do have two JWs dated 6/25 that came off of a '71 TA. This was a lower vin Van Nuys car built shortly after the strike. Also, just recently I saw a JW on Ebay dated 7/15. I believe some of the earlier cars still may have had JWs until they were used up. I have also heard of a few original early '71 TAs have mixes of KNs/JWs and KRs/KNs. Probably not the norm though.
I have also seen a June built '71 Norwood car that had a KN (7/28) spare in the trunk. Still had the original tire on it. Also, I had a 12/30/70 KR that I personnally took off of a '72 TA Norwood car that had been sitting since the early 80s. That car had two more 12/30 KRs on it too but they were really really rusty (WI rusty, not TX rusty). What does all of this mean??? I don't know! Never say Never, I guess. In some cases the date spans are much longer than expected. However, for your '71, not knowing what was originally there, I would go with the KRs, anything dated around Dec/Jan. or what ever those specific runs were dated. If you seen an earlier set for a good price, jump on them since I don't believe you can guarantee what a correct date span should be.

Lloyd, You are likely correct. That is why I stated that it depends on the build date of the car and that it can be a KN or a KR. I also said that I have not owned or documented any 71's after February of 1971. Nothing is etched in stone with Pontiac. Especially in 1971 and 1972!

I also would not disagree that early 71's were equipped with JW's. After all, the build sheets show that was to be.

I have a Van Nuys March built 71 that came with 7/25 Jws. Never seen that date code before but they are original to the car.

So they changed the stamp for the wheels from JW to KN on 7/26/70 then....?

I had a very early 71 T/A that I parted in the early 80s. The VIN was less than 100. The car was a real oddity because it had a 3.07 12-bolt posi rear. The block was cast in in May 1970. It used several carry-over parts from 1970, including a set of JW wheels. It's unlikely the car had been modified because it was only 12 yrs old when it was totalled by the lady owner.

I've seen KRs dated 11/10/70 and early December (12/6/70?). I seem to recall a late October '70 dated KR somewhere along the line as well, like 10/26/70. That one stuck out since that would have been during the strike, however, I suppose the wheel supplier could have still been up and running. I have heard of August dated KNs but have never seen one.
