That looks like the Ernie's Camera "Shutter Bug" dragster. If so there is a good chance that I was a spectator at that race. It was at San Fernando Drag Strip ("the Pond"). Later he blew a right rear slick close to the finish lights and went through the beams in pieces at over 180 mph.

I believe this is a picture of The Shudder Bug on the day of the accident. I definitely remember being there. At the time they said the engine blew up and a piece hit the right slick, which crashed the car. Later "Wild Bill" said they got the air pressure too low on the tire, causing it to blow out. The old engine is now in the recreated car.

Roger Huntington wrote for High Performance Pontiac when Nunzi was writing form the back in the 80's. He was the best for tech stuff, and influenced my writing escapades

Never knew he built a Pontiac powered car

That is Bill "Grumpy" Jenkins and that cigar was kind of his trademark before cigars and cigarettes were not P/C. Many Pics of "Da Grump" back in the day showed him with a cigar. I think he just chewed it if I remember correctly, wasn't unusual for bull ring racers back then to chew on one during a race. In a rollover it kept your teeth from hitting together when your chin hit your chest.

Found this on another site...a bunch of great shots, including a few of the Gay's funny car. Be sure to check the cars in the background too, saw a bunch of large Pontiacs in them.

Now that, and a few years before, is true drag racing. Anything after that and I'm just not much interested in.

Landy got called on it one time by the staging lane director, who thought he was smoking the cigar while staging.

Without saying a word, Dick just turned it around and put the other end in his mouth. After getting the nod from the director he then proceeded to make the run.
