yes it is. I have many pictures of it. Also, my interior pic of the car with the parody cloth bench and radio block off plate has been posted on PY before.

What is the diffenence between the Magnum 400 and the 1970 1/2 GT-37? I have often wondered if the Magnum 400 is nothing more than a batch of specially ordered GT-37's equiped with the powertrain and options the dealer wanted then took off the GT-37 badges and tacked on his own decals to make a dealer special. Nothing diffenent than what Don Yenko did with the 69 Cameros and Chevelles. Order a cars with a little known option, COPO options in Don's case, GT-37 in Kanfel's tack on some decals and sell your own dealer super car.

Exhaust tips are different (non GTO style), NO T-37 tags on it. It was a Tempest not a Tempest T-37 with the GT option. It was a Tempest and the Ralley II's had trim rings. No hood pins either. It was a Tempest with a 400. Then some options were added. It was a dealers answer to the RR.
In '69 the Tempest w/350 and the bob cat package beat the RR. It was a good article in one of the mags. Have it at home just not there now.

I agree with Jack, I believe the Magnums were all post coupe 400 4-speed Tempests (not sure that any were autos). Since the Tempest was renamed T-37 later in the year and the GT-37 came out at that time or later, you have to wonder if Knafel's Magnum gave GM the idea for the GT-37.

68bird,
I have thought about that scenario also. The 2 models are to close in the equipment they offer not to have some sort of link. Matt |

My Dad bought one new and he said that he was sure they were ordered as 6cyl cars and Knafel installed the 400 4sp and Headers. It was a radio delete bench seat car

That very well could be but my Dad and a buddy of his bought them the same day right off of the show room and he said a few times over the years they were 6 bangers. I think I have a copy of an interview with Knafel stating the same. I will try to dig it out tonight

But why 6 cyl. when the 400 was an option? Way too much $$ to do the conversion from 6 to 8. You still had to worry about emissions tests then or they had to pass the test. Kinda like the T-37. No way would I have bought the 6 cyl and then have it converted. No warrenty and quickly no rear end. Had to by the engine, 4 speed, clutch/pressure plate, probably the rear end replace and still pass state emissions tests. No way GM would have let them have a warrenty.

I was thinking that myself. I looked for the interview I had a copy of but cannot find it, I havent seen it in quit a few years. Someone had found the article and gave it to my Dad probably 15 years ago. I will get the picture of the car and try to scan it and post it

I would guess also that perhaps, just perhaps, that if they ran out of the real 'Magnum 400's' that they may have put the stripes, wheels, etc on a 6 cyl and put it on the showroom floor. Kinda hokey, but you never know with new car dealers back then, and even now.

The pic is from March of 1970 and I know he bought it right when they put the add out for them. I will get it scanned and loaded this weekend when I get a free moment from all the plans the old lady made for me around the homestead.

Flea, did you ever get around to scanning a picture of your dad's original car?

The Magnum 400 is purely a dealer-prepped supercar, much like the 1969 Yenkos except for the COPO aspect. Anyone could order a similar car from any Pontiac dealer, but only Knaffel packaged and branded it as their own.
