hey folks, my car is STILL down, motor issues, getting them sorted, but man, it's taking forever.....and ever...........and ever............and ever...........

anyhoo, while she's down, i thought i would tackle this never ending daunting task:

i am in the market for new wheels and tires.

these TT 2's came on it, they look good, but i am tired of having the same wheels everyone else has at the meets. plus, the rears are 10 inches with maybe 4 1/2 backspace, so they rub the rear fenders REAL bad. i have to have her hiked up to the sky to deal with it.

so, i have thought about everything from body colored steelies with poverty caps,(widened for the rear, ala b-man, loves his wheels and tires on ALL his rides....) to oldschool darker center torque thrust d's, 16's probably, to 17's of a billet style, from foose to the intro hurst looking ones. i still want the big and little look, i think the car just asks for it, albeit a dated look, the car just has that 'zinger' feel to it, ala the 'muscle machine' diecasts, and that's what i want to keep in theme with me thinks.

with that in mind, whatever i do, i would want the rears to be a bit bigger in side profile and width, but i suppose the rim diameter could be the same as the front as well. i like the more polished look that nice aluminum rims give, but i also like the look of no frills get down to business look of basic rims. the car already has a pretty mean stance and attitude to it, and sound, (3 inch exhaust all the way out with flowmaster super 40's, and electric exhaust cutouts...)

so i want to keep it in that vein, clean, mean, fightin' machine.

ok folks, let me hear it, ANY suggestions welcome, go ahead and have some fun with it!!

I think a set of 15X5 and 15X8 chrome-reverse steel wheels made to your specs would be hot. No hubcaps of course.

Find some older-looking 15" centers to make them from, most of the aftermarket chrome-reverse wheels have ugly dual-pattern centers with 10 lug holes.

I used '55 -'56 Chevy wheels for the centers I needed. I'm not aware of any other 15" GM 4.75" bolt pattern centers that would be useable.

I absolutely guarantee that your ride would be the only one with these wheels at the meets you attend.

I don't think that painted steelies with poverty caps would look right with the blower sticking trough the hood. But CHROME steelies with poverty caps might look pretty cool, especially with the rears widened.

Yep, that's exactly how they should look.

What size tires do you have on thoses wheels now?

I'd run ET gasser wheels in the front,and the ET altered wheels in the rear.

Both in the "as cast" center/polished rim versions.

Say 15 x 6" in the front,15 x 8" in the rear.

275-60-15's for the rear tires minimum,and say something like a 215-70-15's for the fronts.

That would look badass IMO,and still be very driveable.

You could go with the skinny front rim (15x4.5") and the front runner style tires too,but I really dont like those for regular street driving myself,just not as safe or durable.

But those would look really cool as well.

Here's a car I found on the HAMB site, a '55 Chevy custom (owned by Mark Moriarity) with a brand-new set of chrome reverse wheels. I know it's a completely diifferent style of car than your GTO, but the wheels are pretty impressive and a good example of what I was talking about.

These ones were built by Wheels of Steel http://www.custombuiltsteelwheels.com/, if you want a set be patient as they will take a while to get made.

The pics are big so you can see the wheel details a little better.

Wheels are very much an expression of one's self... and everyone has their own tastes. Me personally... I would go with some bitchin old school mags on your car... and maybe mickey thompson indy profile tires to complete the vintage look.... or re-treaded cheater slicks!
For wheels, stay with 15 inch and run something vintage, like the old slotted mags, vector or turbine mags, old torq-thrust mags. Leave the 16" and larger for the newer rides. Your car is a '68... run something that is era-correct.

Also you can never go wrong with 15" wheel vintique rally I's!!!

wow bart, those chrome steelies look amazing! yeah, i'm thinking 15 inchers for sure on size, still torn, arghh. man this is a tough choice!!

so, do they make new versions of the 'ansens' wheel posted above? that definitely has the vintage look to it.....

You can buy new Ansen Sprint wheels from American Racing.

They offer a 15X8 with 4-1/2" backspace, would be a tight fit in the back with a stock-width '68 rear end since they'd sit out a bit further (about 1/2") than what would be ideal.

Too bad they only offer a 15X7 with 4" backspace as the only other 15" size.

You'd have to find some 'real' Ansens on the used market if you really want drag-race skinnies for the front (I would!).

Davey that set of wheels and tires at the Tiger run, Intro Hurst lookalikes with painted centers i'd go 18x8rear 17x7 front or skinnier whatever, they have been growing on me and i think they look old school and modern at the same time, either that or ansens or vintage race wheels!
