Pontorquer,

Following are '69+ timing cover casting numbers followed by corresponding part number & actual useage. Majority of these part #'s have been discontinued for umpteen years, so if undergoing a high point restoration, the timing covers will have to be sourced in nice used shape.

Casting number
9790347, pn 9790346: 1968 Pontiac V8
9796346, pn 9796346: 1969 & 1970 Pontiac V8

482883, pn 482893: 1971 through at least 1975 Pontiac V8's (swear I've removed them from '76's as well). These will work on '69's & 70's, but are not numbers matching correct.
Research has shown that the positioning of the 482893 casting number is more to the lh of center (within 1/2" of the timing "stob") on '74 & '75 timing covers. The later 482893 timing covers also have a circular date imprint, with the year (usually '74 or '75) in the middle. There also was 482893 timing cover with the casting number cast haphazardly up & down a little. Lastly, the early 482893 timing covers I have sourced, the 482893 casting number is basically dead center, & below the number will be the diamond shaped DIECAST vendor mark.

'67 & earlier Pontiac timing covers:

9783130, pn 9783129 is the '66 timing cover. Have several of these.
Somewhere I have a copy of the Classic GTO Newsletter (circa '79-80?) & I believe it broke out the '66 as having a different part number than the '67. In this newsletter, Dr Phil Baughman had pics & breakdowns of many of the original waterpump castings, & he provided casting & the part numbers for the timing covers. Do not have its casting number handy, but the late '63, '64, & '65 have the smallest "stob" with timing marks, & that is how I've always sorted the late '63-65 timing cover from the '66's & '67's.

Hope this helps.

The '66 tripower engine used same timing coiver as std '66 engine. The main reason one usually has to worry about a timing cover when installing on a '66 tripower engine, is the timing covers up through at least early '74, had a recess cast into the top back to clear a tripower water neck. On several '66 -68 engines I've put together p/s set-ups & timing covers to utilize the '69+ style of timing cover & '68+ dampers. On two, these engines were equipped with '66 tripower & attention had to be paid that was not furnishing the non recess late model timing covers.

Anyone know if this is confirmed to fit a 69 400?

Does anyone know what year timing cover this part # 482893 is -- does the "1" under the cast number signify 1971?

Cast number is 482883 --- with just a "1" underneath that.

My 78 looks about the same as all mine with cast timing marks.

The 523 thru 527 prefix numbers are 57 only .

The 481 thru 484 prefix are 1971 only numbers.
