I have it on excellent knowledge that Mr Aragone is going to be a very happy man and some HO guys are not. Something in the range of about 17 hp. With the additional weight of the 73-74 cars it should make for a real drivers race.

If Paul is not pleased by Dan's great build then he is a tough man to make happy. Paul should be a very quick man this fall.
Dan built a motor that was intended to be able to certify at will. With this in mind we have one truly accurate SD build. Paul has never rebuilt the trans or replaced the original converter. Both have been done and are ready to participate with the fresh SD motor. Paul's old motor had several tough items that needed to be addressed to save the block and this may have compromised the old build more than anticipated after seeing these new numbers. I have always thought the best strength a HO has over the SD is torque. In the past the SD's with their much larger duration all gave up tq for rev. A lot of tq in the past but this car has a maxed out compression ratio on its side this time and of course those excellent SD heads just waiting to take advantage of it. With all good uncrompromised parts this time and Dan's expert ability to put a motor together... Ok enough stalling. Our HO's are in serious trouble here guys. I hate to say it but it is true. This SD has a real opportunity to run heads up with any HO. Thank god those SD cars are all a bit porky compared to HO's as that may have to be a bit of a saving grace. A really good HO so far will make around 532@3300 tq and 403@4800 hp. Paul's SD made 534@3300 tq and 420.5@5000 hp! Yes you read that correctly. Two more lb-ft tq and 17 hp. More rev as expected due to the bigger cam SD's use which also has alway's allowed Paul to run a 3.90 gear compared to the 3.73's the HO's need. Those numbers are flat fantastic and then consider it is a low compression motor. The hp is compromised a bit due to the compression but those That is just about enough power to offset the 200 lb weight penalty of Paul's car over a HO T/A or T-37. Add in an auto trans and this should be one fast SD. Dead legal SD also. This could really level the playing field between the two cars. The first time I ever went drag racing when I was 16 a pair of 100% original auto SD and HO T/A's were there. They ran within a couple thou all day. I think history may repeat itself here. Congrats to Paul and Dan. That car should really move out. The motor comes back over here this week for us to install with a few weeks for some Test and Tune before Stanton. Anyone want to put a guess on the ET? I will save my guess to see what everyone thinks first. Mark |

WOW! That's GREAT NEWS!
So it appears that the "factory ratings" on BOTH SD's & HO's were actually pretty accurate being close together? Hopefully, this will be a GOOD INCENTIVE for the SD owners to get their cars off the TRAILER & on to the TRACK! |

I think the real question is...What power was Mr. Aragona's old motor making? My guess is Dan and Mark found about 25-30 hp/20-25 ft lbs of tq.The baseline power would tell what it would pick up at the track.
12.89 @ 107.50 (good air/converter choice)

17hp and 200 lbs.......It is going to be close I would say. How much if any weight is the auto trans going to add? Looks like the driver will make the difference in a 4 speed car. My guess is 12.4 @ 112mph. Will be in Stanton to see first hand though! Best regards Kirk

12.74 @ 110.6 tires and getting it to hook are going to be the key for him.
i like those results, very similar to my original engine build using everything stock spec but the rockers (1.52 roller tips) and cam. (420 at 5300--532 lbs./ft @ somewhere around 2800--torque was already on the backside of the curve as we brought the dyno up to speed.) |

The old motor was 395@5000 and 500.5@3300. Do not forget his trans and converter will add some help. Before the rebuild the trans had a mind of its own and was a bit difficult.
Someone asked how much the auto weights. His car always was an auto. I think everyone is close on ET. I am looking at the trans and motor to combine for a: [email protected] We have a pretty good idea where a highly utilized SD can go now maybe someone will max out a HO a bit more than Dan or I have. The HO has some left in it and the cars are lighter than the SD's so this battle has just begun it appears. The SD's look like they will definitly be applying the pressure now. It seems both will be fast this time around. I truly hope we can welcome Paul into the mid 12's this fall along side the HO's. Nice to see another Pontiac perform at a high level. Mark |

Mark,
![]() I guess I was not very clear with my question....just wondering if the Auto trans car weighs more or less than a 4 speed car. Once you stated the Chrysler 440+6 manual trans cars are 90lbs. heavier than the auto trans cars. Also, as I am not that familiar with drag racing (road racer at heart) do the auto cars have any advantage other than being easier to drive consistantly? I guess I grew up thinking the 4 speed had the advantage... Thanks Kirk

threefidee,
![]() We will be there on Friday as well ..... Instead of a Pontiac, we will be driving there in a C4 Corvette......Do you know if there is a class for such a thing to race in? Normaly I would not consider it, but from the link Mark posted there is quite a variety of cars running in pure stock. And our car is just that "pure Stock". Just did a tune up on it today, getting ready for the trip. What are the requirements for driver safety? I'll go find the link and check it out....Might have to let my wife Debi drive too! ![]() ....Kirk

Here is the link .. http://www.geocities.com/psmcdr/
1955-74 Muscle cars only for the Pure Stock Muscle Car Drag Races. I am considering driving my wife's 68 Firebird 350 HO Convertible up and back. I am done racing that car but the top down option has got me thinking but it would be about 300 miles one way. Jody

Mark,
Please help me. I might be confused. If my memory is correct. At the last few Purestock and Fast/Purestock combo races their were only 2 SD cars attending. So if Paul's beautiful real SD was one, then my 455 Formula w/ SD "cloned" package must be the other. With that deductive reasoning complete. What exactly am I to think of these comments: "Nice to see another Pontiac perform at a high level." This one must be about me. "Dead legal SD also" This one does not smell nice "If an honest SD has a chance at chasing a HO down the track..." OMG, could it be that, no it can't be. Am I a dishonest SD? You can't beat around the bush when there is only 2 consistent SD's participating. Now, I am a big boy. And I have taken some heat for other strong combinations we run. The difference was I BUILT them. The credit or liablity of the SD is not for me. I am just the pilot/wheelman/lucky bastard who gets to drive it without having to pay for it. I tried to purify my Purestock racing soul by purging the SD of its sinful 1.65 roller rockers at the Martin event. And the drag racing Gods rewarded me a quicker et minus 1.5 mph. Does this not make me an honest SD? Seriously, what you should have written was what you are obviously thinking every time I click off a 12.50-60 pass. "That Chuck Lombardi is cheating with that SD built by John Glasgo." The "dead legal" and "honest SD" added no content to your post. Each comment was not necessary in relation to forum/post context. Last year some info trickled down to my dad and I about the 71 HO GTO being a car "that didn't count/wasn't real/doesn't matter" etc.. you get the jist of it. Now, I really did not care because it is not our car, I just tune/tow it for my cousin and sometimes he lets us run events with it. I let it pass. But these little nuances touch a little closer to home. I am offended. I am available for a clarification of respective comments by telephone. (401) 640-9256 |
