My Q-Jet rochester has given out on me. I finally got my T/A running today and the other set of barrels on the carb aren't kicking in. So anyone have an opinion on what kinda of carb to buy for a 77 T/A? Or pass a free carb my way lol.
Thanks. |

I'd rebuild the Q-jet.

May be something very simple to fix. If you are trying to get the secondaries to kick in when the vehicle is in the garage, probably not going to happen. If the secondaries don't kick in on the road test, try to determine why not. Is the choke plate opening completely (vertical position)? Are the secondary plates stuck closed from long disuse?

q-jet secondaries don't "wear out"..............something is keeping them from functioning.

Axle Ive had a similar issue with a crappy Ebay rebuild. You should take a good long look at how the choke and secondary linkages operate on the passengerside of the carb. I'm a backyard mechanic so I can't give you a name for the doohicky that I had to bend into proper position or the spring that the crappy rebuilders put in wrong. It might hhelp if you have access to a similar qjet to see whats suppose to happening. Dont buy any rebuilt carbs from ebay unless you know for a fact that its a repretable builder. Theres a lot of hacks on ebay selling crap remans. But back to qjet vs tripower, I'd only use the tri power for wow factor because they do look freakin' awesome!

Might want to post some clear pics if you can't figure it out. I've seen some members here "fix" carbs, just from pics posted.

Believe it or not, even the best carb ever made needs some maintainace after 20+ years of service.
You just happens to have one of the best carbs ever made. Give it a good clean out, jiffy kit, new float and at least a new primary choke pull off, (sec choke pull-off is an option in my opinion). Why not start with ordering Cliff Ruggles book on Q-jets, then you´ll be good to go. |

I've put a kit in it and replaced the float the last week in October. I'll try to get some pictures up or something.

Is the choke operational or have you disabled it? There's a link under the choke housing that locks out the secondaries until the choke has dropped off completely. If it's not opening completely, the link might be staying engaged...
It's the secondary lockout lever in this picture.

I had a similar experience with the secondaries not working on my qjet. I rebuilt it myself but I had not prior knowledge of them. I don't know what was wrong with mine but it worked fine after I took it back apart and put it back together. That was a simple enough fix for me you might want to try it.

I have one 17058394 in working condition. I also have another from around 1974, the guy I got the engine from said it was an 800cfm, it is in rough shape. If you were closer I would sell you the working one for $50 and just give you the other, unfortunately shipping is expensive these days.
