GTOAA/POCI, next year?

Hey, we're going to be there, they gave us a free spot someplace to get up and say a few words. Can I hang out with all you FAST guys, even though my "slow" daily driver only runs low 11's?.........Cliff

WAY back non radial ProTrac L60/15 pulled 1.81s vs race tires at 1.52 60 ft. was approx .75 worse et on other end. Those tires squealed louder than any tire I ever heard! They were tryin to hook! (40 psi on 7 inch rim) They were better than MT indys by .2 then . Old Kelly bias superchargers were very good in the early mid 70's compared to MT indy or others(except M/H).

I drive my 63 tempest with a 421---980 super duty heads----859 2x4 super duty intake on the street went 11.67 @ 112 with 1.59 60ft. @ Norwalk this year. But it does have the M/t drag radials for the street on it. Makes a habit of stopping at ever other gas station.

Earlier in this thread was a post about Ernie Keppler's 78 white catalina. I'd have to find out some details but I know he went in the 11.0's at Norwalk on Walmart drag radial's with pump gas through full exhaust. Maybe Hooter knows more of the specifics or can find out. His car is the ultimate sleeper. He should be at the top of the list.

Gearbanger - Mickey Thompson ET Street Radials are NOT drag radials. They are a DOT tire and I drive them on the street all the time.
Interesting thread that you've started.

Actually they are a drag radial... My car runs 10.0 on the MT ET Street Radials with 1.3 60 foot times... Much harder to run anything near that on a true radial (Wal-Mart) tire... I hope you get better life out of your MT Radials than I do - about 4 trips to the track and mine are done

"I hope you get better life out of your MT Radials than I do - about 4 trips to the track and mine are done."

Ours don't do much better. About 40 runs the wear grooves are gone, then they really start to work well, for about 30-40 more runs, then the cords start showing.

They require WAY too much burnout for my liking. I ran a set of MT ET Street bias ply tires with tubes for 4 seasons, and got them used! They required little if any burnout at all.

The only advantage I see with the radials is that they are much more stable on the top end of the track, same 60' times.

I've heard good things about the Hoosier's, thinking of trying them next season. They also have full 10" of tread with an 11" sidewall, which will be great for the stock 7" rims that we use......Cliff

Probird, please get us some more info on that Catalina. I would love to know his setup and the weight of the car as well as the kind of tires and the tire size.

But.....did you say Wal Mart "drag" radials????????

Oops, I did say Walmart drag radials. I meant to say Walmart white walls. I do know the engine has d-port heads, cast iron intake, log manifolds, and is all steel. I'm sure it's pretty heavy. I'll bet Hooter knows more about it than I do. Some of the stuff he may not want to anyone know either. I'll try to find ot more next time I talk to him.

69Goat1: your point is well taken. Even Mickey Thompson calls the ET Streets a "drag radial" in their description. However the ET streets are a DOT tire whereas the M/T Drag Radial is not. And the ET Streets can be driven on the street, which I have done. It seems that people use the terms "Street" and "Drag" almost interchangeably when in fact they are two different tires.
Also it is interesting to see the comments concerning the longevity of the ET Streets.
The first two sets that I had I pulled off the Catalina as I thought they were about done [at least for driving on the street]. I gave the old tires to two of my Poncho buddies who are still running them at the strip and both have set new best times with my "old worn-out" ET Streets. Guess I gave up on them too soon. I also agree that they require more burn-out than advertised.
BTW: Looks like they hook up pretty darn good for you --- 1.3 short time !!!! WOW !! Outstanding on any tire.

Jim

Jim - they have a DOT designation but that is about as "street" as they get... My car only 60's low 1.4's on slicks - fastest I have ever been able to go is on the MT ET "Street" radial at 10.03 @ 132... On slicks it is not that quick...

Run your car on a Wal-Mart radial and you will see what Gearbanger is looking for...

"Cliff, I have run the Hoosier as well... I went through 3 sets of drag radials last Summer... 1 set was the hoosiers They did 60 foot the same at 1.38 FWIW..."

Ouch, that makes for some expensive racing!

I was hoping the Hoosier's would hook up better and not require as much burnout as the 275/60/15 MT Drag Radials?

The plain old ET Streets we used to run lasted just about forever, but the car was very "loose" on the top end of the track. Ran just about as quick, and as consistant with them. We may go back that direction, not sure yet?.....Cliff

So where do the McCreary DOT tires fall? The ones the roundy round guys run in the dirt? Are they a street tire or a race tire? Old Ugly went 11.71@115 on a set of those, with a 1.59 60ft at 3750lbs. They would move half an inch on the rim each launch. Got a set used and ran them for 4 years, they work best with no tread showing and they hook stupid well on the street, even in the cold.

The idea of the thing is to be able to compare to production cars like corvettes etc.. So we are going to keep it simple by saying it has to be a regular tire and not a soft compound tire. It's probably like "if you have to ask then the answer is probably no" type of deal. Plain ole street tires.

The car needs to have an exhaust system. It doesn't have to be quiet or have tailpipes it just has to be muffled.

It has to run on pump gas and that means 93 octane or less. I am not talking about your town has a Sunoco that sells 114 "at the pump"

I saw your signature and it says you had a 1.99 60ft time on that 12.62 run. Was that with a drag radial? You should be able to get a 1.99 on a regular radial.
