a smkoing law that prohibits smoking in public places. Personally, as a non-smoker, I love the law and find myself enjoying a night in a bar more than ever.

I know IL cant be the only state that enforces this....Where else??

I hear you. Im lucky I don't have any friends that smoke in the house. Smoking at home is worse than in any bar

This graphic was in the Tribune on Monday. Looks like more and more are going the right way on this one. Some only ban workplace and restaurants, others only ban restaurants and bars.

In my opinion this thread fits better in the Lobby... so far.
It has been that way here for a couple of years, no smoking in businesses open to the public with 5 or more employees, no smoking in restaurants or public buildings. The loophole is that if a business is age restricted to 21 and over, smoking is allowed indoors. That is why AR isn't shaded in the link above.
It seems to be working fine.

Very interesting Alan. Thanks for posting. Its funny how they use IN as an example of how they ban. Its confusing. Just like a few people I know that live there.

We've done it for 2 years now here in Springfield. It is banned in all public places within 15 feet of any entrance. There are still bars here that are trying to oppose the ban. They have threatened their liquor licenses and they are now supposedly complying. We went to 3 different bars several months ago where the bartenders were smokng and giving patrons ashtrays to smoke. Even though there is a smoking ban there are businesses and people that will push it. I for one am happy that there is a smoking ban. The biggest relief is at the bowling alley. You didn't used to be able to see from one end to the other and you smelled like you had just smoked a whole pack by yourself. It is so nice to be able to leave and not smell like a cigarette. It really is a nasty habit that shouldn't be infringed on others. If I was a smoker I would may see it a different way. There are smokers that are courteous and then there are those that would blow it right in your face. Those are the ones that have me glad that it has been made a law.

No smoking in public places over here either. Their looking at banning it in peoples cars if they have children with them.
They also just had a segment in the news about third hand smoke. Even if someone smokes outside they carry the chemicals back in leading to the same effects.

Yesterday I was in a parking lot when a car pulled up in the next space. A guy steps out, and with him comes a big puff of smoke. He throws his cigarette on the ground, then opens the back door and helps his 2 year old daughter out of the car. Absolutely disgusting. Its too bad the law can't do something to help a poor kid like that.

Two places that my family would frequent in the past where people would smoke.....bowling alleys and pool halls.

It's really nice to be able have these activities now without coming home smelling like an ashtray. We would purposely wear older clothes so we could dump them in the washer when we got home.

If smokers want to suck that poison into their bodies and pollute the air around them, they can do it in their own space.

My cousin just died 2 days ago...a longtime smoker..did that shorten her life? probably.

To Rick's(Probird) point, there are still many bars around here still allowing smoking. At first, they all complied but then allowed smoking when they figured out enforcement was not going to happen unless someone complained. In the small town I live in, all 4 bars still allow it. Really sucks as I like to have an occasional beer and hate coming home smelling like a cigarette(especially my winter coat).

Bars and others are PRIVATE businesses. If you don't want to go to a bar that allows smoking go to one that doesn't. WHY should the government be able to ban something that is legal and THEY MAKE MONEY ON? It should be up to the owner and their customers NOT the government. If they really don't want people smoking they should ban the sale of cigarettes. But they will not do that because they make too much money.

To much government interference. In my neighborhood there are no laws and there are more non-smoking bars and restaurants than there are those that allow smoking. Let the market place decide. When my wife and I go out we go to stictly non-smoking establishments. If someone wants to smoke, let them go to a smoking allowed establishment.

That doesn't affect my life at all.

While I do agree with yours and Sleepy's comments, it is darned nice to walk out of just about anyplace without smelling like an ashtray.

Ohio has had the smoking ban in place for a few years now.

I'm a non-smoker, don't like to be around smoke, don't allow it in my home or car. Fla banned most "public" place smoking (bars may be exempt) by Constitutional Amendment a few years ago.

I voted against the ban. I am entirely in agreement with Sleepy & JeffP on this.

Now that we have established that the rules for YOUR property can be dictated by the Government, you have lost your right to own private property. You no longer own your property, you are just the caretaker, doing the bidding of the actual Owner, your State Government. They tell you how to operate and you say yessir.

You guys that applaud this should watch what you wish for. You have allowed Gov't to trample on your God given birthrights.

When the majority decides that you should not be allowed to work on old cars in the "privacy" of your own garage, the precedent will not be on your side.

The Government is stepping in to control and regulate every aspect of your life and everything you own and most people are standing by cheering them on. Soon you won't be able to flush the toilet in your own house without the Government telling you on what day it is permissible.

It's not illegal to keep hamburger out of the refrigerator for days, but it is illegal to leave it out,cook it up and serve it. Same thing here, there not telling you that you can't smoke. They are just regulating where you can't smoke since it is a health hazard. You're allowed to smoke just not where other people eat, drink, shop and work.

There are already places that say you can't smoke in YOUR apartment. and a town in AZ that has banned smoking in the city limits.
What's next? confiscate your car because someone reports a little puff of smoke?

While I agree with the above, I also surmise that you would have the government ban smoking from all bars and restaurants. If I am correct then you would have the government ban smoking from that dirty little bar on the outskirts of town that you have never entered and would never dream of entering. How in the world does that make your life better. All that does is give you control over someones life that you have no interest in whatsoever.
Why not live and let live if it is not an infringement on your life in any way.

If I choose to go to dinner and don't want to smell smoke, I go to a non-smoking restaurant. Easy as that. No government involved. If people want to smoke themselves to death in an establishment that allows it then that is their decision not mine. My decision would be to go to a different establishment. No harm, no foul.

One of my sister-in-laws is a vegatarian and thinks that it should be illegal to serve meat in a restaurant as the smell makes her sick. See where I'm going here?
