I am running a ported 62 D port head thats been done by Jim Taylor. I have no idea what they flow cause he wont give up the flow numbers.I want to go to a set of KRE heads so I can run pump gas.The car right now runs 10.51 128.9 .The car is a 79 firebird 3600# w driver 455 1050 holley victor intake 630 lift cam 1.5 rockers 3800 ati conveter 4.10 gear. Question is can these heads out of the box flow enough to support the same mph and et that I have now

Out of the box KRE d-ports? I honestly don't think so.
However SD Performance sells several ported versions for not much more money, and they can and will support that and more. |

Out of the box, not likely. With some porting however they should have no trouble outperforming the 62's.

If your talking about and out of the box High Port head...not a problem, but definitely not a D-port.

The KRE heads in the 290cfm offerings will easily make more power at every rpm than the ported 62's. I would be surprised if the 62's flow much beyond about 250cfm. One can easily get 230-240cfm out of iron "D" ports, but it takes some serious work to get them into the 260-270cfm range. The combustion chambers in the KRE's are also superior to the flat/open chambered 62's as well.
Does your engine also use one of Jim Taylor's super-duper top-secret cams as well?......Cliff

Jerry knows him well, and he used to come and see Jerry from time to time. I met him once at Martyns. I never dealt with Jim personally. Anyway, I hope you acheive your goals next season!! You going for nines?

Could just have a shop flow a port or two, then post the #'s. Then you can send him a link to the post.
You where told he wouldn't tell you the flow #'s but he cant keep you from getting them After all you own them & will most likely need the #'s to sell them when that time comes. |

Those 62s must flow pretty decent. Calculator figures 129mph @ 3600lbs is 600hp. Thats needs about 300cfm doesnt it?

With a tight convertor and 3.73 gears, mine went 11.40 @ 120 MPH naturally aspirated at 3850 lbs. I don't think 129 MPH @ 3600 lbs. requires 300-cfm.

You have a good set of heads. Working your chassis should net some 10.20-10.30 ET's with that MPH.
A set of 310 D Ports would out do what you have. Out of the box is doubtful. You will gain from the 60 lbs removed off the front of the car as well.

Not really much of a feat, we had KRE port a set of 48's quite a few years ago, and supply a 260/260 @ .050" flat solid cam to go with them. Set on a plain old 455 with TRW forgings and cast rods it cranked out around 640hp. Mid 10's still show the engine is making good power, and that the owner is effectively using it. This day and age, having any secrecy about head flow and cam specs, it's just not necessary. I had contact with the Mr. Jim Taylor in question once, having to ask what cam was placed in one of his customers engines so I could set up his q-jet for it. Never did get a straight answer, and was chastised for touching a carburetor that had just been completely/correctly rebuilt, and "dyno" tuned EXACTLY for the engine he had just completely rebuilt. FWIW, it looked like it came from the bottom of a farm pond, then got Eastwood sprayed right over the grime, upper idle airbleeds smashed closed, primary shaft had about .030" side-play, excessively warped across the front/leaking at the gasket, WAY off on the jet and rods sizes, etc, no Viton parts, wrong power piston spring (clipped the stock one down some), etc, etc, etc.....but who am I to question what others are doing, I just wanted the darned cam specs so I could get the carb set up correctly?......Cliff
