The book list a 1972 GTO with a 455 HO, 4 speed and 3:55 gears, 15.4 seconds in the quarter mile at 92 mph...A 1972 T/A with a 455 HO, 4 speed and 3:42 gears, 13.9 seconds in the quarter mile at 104.6 mph.

If the 6x based 400 of 77-79 wasn't so good, why has it always been so popular in the NHRA stock classes? It hasn't been a secret for 20 years.

And Car and Driver tested the 79 TA at 15.10

I just saw a HPP retro test from a old mag and it ran 14.96 & 15.04
Considering the weight, converters and emissions and gearing that was hauling ass in that era.

I have never owned any other car except a Pontiac and I'm 47. It is with deep sadness I read that article even knowing that the day would come. Pontiacs always appealed to me in a certain way that no other car could.

I will buy Pontiacs only for the rest of my life.

GM tried to sell Saab and failed, they tried to sell Saturn and failed, They're supposed to have sold Hummer but that hasn't been proven to be true, as yet. The one marque they could probably have sold was Pontiac, and even turned down an offer for it.

So what's new since the bankruptcy? It seems like business as usual and they still can't do anything right. Wait, I'll take that back, they do build some pretty good cars. But they sure don't appear to be able to run a business.

Problem is Pontiac is the only make that GM could have sold for lots of money. The other cars wouldn't have been that great of a cash infusion to GM anyways.

Couldn't agree more. If the members on this forum ran Pontiac, they would challenge Chevy for GM sales leadership.

Just drove by the Orion assembly plant on Friday. Several thousand cars in the holding/shipping lot. Sad to think that the last Pontiac built was probably sitting out there. I wonder if GM will slide that last Pontiac into the Heritage Collection and park it next to the first Pontiac built? They saved the last Oldsmobile built for the GM collection, but with Obama's anti-car goons now in charge of making decisions, that sort of self-respecting sentimentality may not be in vogue.

In GM's defense who would want to buy Saab ? They've always been on the verge of going under before GM bought them - that's why they went to rebadging Subaru's and other GM products as Saabs -

A fed bean counter has no feelings for anything of sentimental value. I wouldn't doubt that they may have already lost track of which car was actually been the last Pontiac.

I have lived in Florida since 1972. And do not live on the beach - about 25 miles inland. Many people have said Pontiac could be resurrested by GM someday and that is the reason they haven't sold it after receiving a few offers. So keep your insults to yourself.

Unfortunately quite a few vocal PY'ers have their heads firmly stuck in 1970 - and that does not translate well when selling new cars, or anything else.

I do not agree one bit with Ms. Myers decisions regarding these storied nameplates, but it may not have been her's to make. GM had a legendarily Byzantine bureaucracy in the 60's - I shudder to think what it is like now...
