Quite right on the metal plating choice. No one plates with cadmium any more because it tends to kill people. Look at the recent news about Chinese-produced charm bracelets for (our) kids. The Chinese were told that there was too much lead in the metals they were making kids toys out of previously, so they stopped using the lead and started using cadmium - up to 95% by weight, of cadmium - that's more poisonous than wearing a plutonium necklace!

I'll be happy to take you up on the offer. I can swap out with whatever I have. Also, aren't there several designs of fan blades differentiated by the number/size of fins?

Yes, the main problem with Cadmium is that it steralizes employees working around it(ouch !!) chemical castration !! But, the EPA still allows a handful of companies to use cadmium. It is still mandated for aero use because scientist haven't found anything better for rust prevention. One of the EPA's 1st orders(recall it was Nixon that signed the EPA into law) was to regul;ate the usage and disposal of cadmium. Anyway, so there is a handful of companies that still use cadmium-mostly platers for aero engine rebuilders. You see somany zinc platers advertising cadmium plating, but if you press them if it is real cadmium or zinc, you will get the zinc answer. As long as you don't grind on it and breath in dust, or eat it(as kids do with anything) you will be ok.Yes, I have seen 2 different fan blade configurations on Pontiacs. The earlier one(which Corvettes and Camaros used) is rarely seen. EMail me directly at [email protected] and give me your address. I will send you one and a nut that has been plated. You can send me yours back after you decide you like the cad plated sheen better than the zinc.. you will.. I will just do an even trade.. no charge..

Also, the blades I have all came off of late 72 or early 73 '928 alternators. I have a half dozen 927,928 and one 902 alternators. Only a couple are early 70's the others are 72-73 dates.. SO I am sure I have the correct fan..

Thanks...Oh, and I changed the temporary mudflaps to some plain black ones and created some blacked out clips to hold them in place without damaging the paint. ;-)

I found an NOS 3026085 thermo vacuum switch and installed that today. Very careful installation due to the outlet nipple and prongs that stick out. Had to be real gentle with the large open end wrench. Not a lot of room in there to swing the wrench.

I believe they are these. This is a shot of an original wiring clip on my Grandmother's 75 Firebird:

Yes, Craig is correct.. All of the Pontiac repo vendors carry good copies of these clips. I would buy them from our host, just seems natural togive them as much business as possible...

How's this for weird?

The bearing that is used for the front of the alternator on most Delco alternators is the exact same bearing used for the idler pulley setup on the larger, fixed mounted alternators (65 amp?) on cars with A/C and rear refog. I replaced the idler pulley bearing on my Grandmother's '75 Firebird a couple years ago and saved the bearing in case I needed it in the future.

When I took my 55 amp alternator apart the other day I thought that bearing looked familiar and lo and behold it was the same "6203" bearing.

njsteve,

Not weird at all. I had a neighbor who ran a bearing distributor warehouse that told me bearings are made to a standard. It carries over to different makes, different years, different components, and on and on. Dimentions will be the same. Quality of materials will vary. It's universal, pretty much world wide(as far as I know). I suspect engineers will design parts with these standards in mind. You might be surprised if you could find a list of all the applications that bearing is used, and not just automotive. Industrial, aviation, marine, etc. FWIW

njsteve, could you share what type/brand of primers and paint they used on your car? I'm thinking about going the single-stage route on my '71 T/A.

I went to the bodyshop today to get your answer. It's a PPG single stage called Concept DCC:

He's getting all the panels ready to shoot all at once - the spoilers, tail panel, fender flares and hood. They are also working on the nose and plastic valance which will be shot seperately, with a flex agent.

Steve- If you wantthe nose to be 100% perfect, tell them notto paint all of it. There is a strip along the foward facing part that was left natural black and was not painted-99% of resto's paintoverthis part and it is technically incorrect. There are 4 screws that hold the bottom brackets to the front grilles(2 each side). The strip where these screws mount, is what I am talking about. We discussed this before and there are pictures on some other thread.. ALso, I recieved your pulley this weekend. it went to the plater with other parts I was sending this morning. I will have itback to you next week. bill

I thought that area was actually painted flat black? Do you have any photos I can show the painter?

With the pastic valance, all that area gets covered by the valance anyway. I guess it's more critical on the steel valance cars since that area is very visible with the open lower area.

I think I may have not explained myself good. The part I am talking about is at the top of the opening in the front of the nose. I will talk some pictures of an original blue nose Ihave. Yes, many paintit flat, but in reality...that area was just un painted. The endura material is a dullblack material, hence the flat black painting.. but it is really suposed to be un painted.. I will post a couple pictures later today..

Thanks to 70RAIII, (Thanks William!), I now have the correctly plated fan, nut and pulley on the the correctly finished (metal, not paint) 1100928 open-face alternator. William can chime in but I believe the finish he got is actually the correct cadmium, like the originals, which is more of a satin finish and not as chrome-looking as the clear zinc that is substituted these days for cadmium, by most industrial platers.
