lol. I do not think you understand what drag racing was in the 60s. Sanctioned? That stuff was for the NHRA guys, 3-4 races a year. There was 20-100 times as much unsanctioned racing as there was sanctioned. It would not have made a bit of a difference. There were drag strips open 4-6 days a week running shows. Many of the bigger names, including Garlits, IVO, Karemesines, Beswick, Nicholson and Liberman were booked in for 100-150 dates in a given year. That is a booked in, pre paid match race every 2-3 days for the entire year! Then, you do it over again the next year. Think about just the logistics of that demand.
Those were the days where you- "run what you brung......and hope you brung enough".

That's an SD car at :52, the same car is at 2:21, before it was painted. It was the original "Tin Indian" (yeah, the first one) which Knafel had converted to a street car. It went through two street owners in the Akron/Pittsburgh area then went to NE PA and went from street back to strip. The A&A coupe at 1:14 was Joe Amato. I'm pretty sure it was the car he drove to a national win and probably fired him up for Top Fuel.

The BEE-ON Video series is a wealth of knowledge and memories of the old strips and cars. Jim Amos, the owner, is someone who does it for the love of it. Lord knows he doesn't make a lot of money at it.

Was turned onto this group of pics from a posting on the CFC board. Lots of historic cars and names in here. Check out this rare shot of Bert Straus' Astre.
