Years ago you had a drain plug on the converter with the converters of this day and age there is no plug, can a bung be welded on the new ones and a drain plug be installed so the converter can be drained------BOB

wouldn't that adversely affect the balance?

The only drain plugs I ever seen were on MOPAR's.

I think the drain plugs on the converters were like the cast iron trans cases and other things that were not worth the effort and expense. If a trans goes, then you are going to throw away a cheap converter or pay to have a good converter cut opened and professionally rebuilt. So the plug is pretty unnecessary on a regular oil change and worthless on a major rebuild.

You could get a bolt together, and problem solved. I have two Chance bolt togethers and, on occasion change the stall.

You can drill and tap your converter with a very small Allen plug. Just pack the drill bit and tap with grease to catch the metal shavings, allow the fluid to drain, then plug. Be sure to use a thread sealant or fluid will leak past the threads when the engine is running. The procedure isn't really necessary unless you are swapping to full synthetic transmission fluid, or draining burned fluid (in which case a transmission rebuild is probably warranted). Any balance issues will be negligible as long as you use the smallest plug feasible. The procedure is outlined in various GM and Haynes manuals if you need a reference of where to drill.

Ron Sessions' book details how to do this to drain a torque converter without removing it. I personally cannot see a reason to drain the converter as if I need to get bad fluid out usually the transmission is going to get rebuilt anyways which means new converter.

I can: I bought a 12" Continental converter and would like to get the Amsoil synthetic out of the old D5 converter before switching over.

I worked at a transmission shop for an eternity, when rebuilding transmissions the majority of rebuilds needed new converters but on occasion we use to drill/tap and flush out converters IF end play, hub and stator checked out ok.
