The price is about $6000 ! with electronics......

(I like to see what experiences people have with things I use) I have one of CPTs exterme duty 2004rs I had purchased 2 years ago from OPGI. At first it shifted too hard (I had to copy a GM TV cable setup to get the geometry right). (it shifts fine now-a little hard in 2nd and 3rd, but livable). The only thing odd is my th400 would do a burnout forever and keep pulling, this one does one and then seems to be in third gear when it gets traction(pulls harder than the 400 on actual acceleration if I roll out to 25mph.(Why does it shift during a burnout when the 400 didnt? It is in a 66 Tempest wagon with a mild 455, 3.42 gears and 28" tall tires. The thing that concerns me is the mention of a couple of people of the excess pressure these CPT units run ruining the thrust bearing on the engine. I havent had a problem so far (engine built in 87', but I dont want to have any either) Should I be worryed about this, and If so, how can I prevent it? Also, do I need the billet parts you have with only about 390 hp, 500 lb ft? This is basically just a cruiser. I would appreciate your feedback.
At 500 lb/ft I wouldn't even suggest a 200-4R without a billet forward drum and servo.

The TH400, were you putting it in low gear during the burnout?
A 200-4R will hold low usually, but if you are leaving either unit in drive, it will shift through the gear during a burnout.

200-4Rs don't seem to have excessive converter charge that kills thrust bearings like a TH400 can.

I test the 200-4Rs in my test vehicle all the time and converter charge pressure is usually 15-40 psi, not 70+ like some TH400s will have.

I greatly appreciate your response. I did have the th400 in low when I did this. I cannot put the th2004r in 1st yet because I still need to modify the original column linkage to drop down that far. It will go to 2nd but not 1st. Years ago had to grind a little off the stop on the column to get the 3 speed to work with the 2 speed column, guess I will have to do this again. If I decide to go with the billet drum (already have the servo) can you sell me the part and I have a local shop install it, or would I have to ship you the unit? Seems to run very well, hate to remove it at this time. I may take it easy on it and ship it over the winter. Dont want to ruin anything if you think 500lb ft is too much.Again, thanks very much.

The CPT unit may have heat treated parts. Run it until it breaks.
I can sell you a billet drum but you may be OK if that heat treated drum is as good as Art says it is.

Considering the cost to upgrade to an OD trans or Gear Vendors, you might consider upgrading the TH-400 with a low gear set and dropping the rear gear ratio back to 2.73-3.08. About the same on the starting line with lower rpm's for "normal" driving, etc.

A LOT less money and still excellent street performance with lower cruising RPM's....Cliff
