I should take a video. I was driving home last night after a cruise. It was 190* downhill at 60~ish outside. I tapped the gauge and it went to 165*. So I know that I need a replacement.

Should I go electrical? Or is mechanical the way to go???
Thanks
Dave

Regardless of whether it's accurate or not, mine has been very consistent for the last 13k miles. Tapping doesn't change anything. The only time it's read differently is after I made the rad/fan changes, leading me to believe that the gauge is not the issue. Instead of creeping up at idle, it creeps up at speed.

I might mess with it today if I feel like sweating my butt off......

I just got off the phone with auto meter, and he said electrical is by far the most accurate, also said if your tapping on the gauge something inside has gotten funky or out of whack! I have a new sending unit coming tomorrow to try first se if it gets any better. U have your gauges inside the car don't you? Mine see's water at times from driving in a rain storm or when i wash the car. U may have to send it in to them he said its free to look at it other than shipping

The auto meter guy also said to see if its a grounding issue run another wire from a ground and ground it to the base of the sending unit and see if gauge reads differently.

I am leaning towards electric anyway. If I am going to pay for shipping. Take it out of the car etc.. I will just get the electric version of my gauges. 45$ Not bad.

well got new sending unit in and took her out for a drive to monitor both gauge's factory, and auto meter one. driving down the highway at 65 with no fan turned on pretty much running 180-185 creeped up to 190 so i turned the fan on for a bit then back off. got back home with fan running again looked at factory gauge and auto meter gauge ,auto meter said 185-190 factory one was around that i am guessing by looking at it? shot the heat gun at thermostat and it was 170 or so. shot at both temp sending units factory one was 175, auto meter one 185.. opened radiator dropped in mommas meat thermometer shhh.. it read 175-178..I also tapped on the auto meter guage this time it didn't move , the only thing i didnt try was another ground wire just to see if it would read any different, perhaps another day..as i let the car idle both temp sending units did read the same for whatever reason that was.. by this time fan had it cooled down to 180 on auto meter gauge that was with fan only on low. its 82 today with a 64 dew point so i would say i am happy with those results.

Drove up to see Henry Winkler "The Fonz" and the car never got over 180* sitting in 10 miles of classics waiting to get into the show. New gauge might say lower... Who knows.

got to 195* cause I forgot about it. Low came on. dropped temp to 185* High brought it down to 175* Got a little warmer out side . Temp was straddling around 190* . Clutch was hurtin'!!!! stop go stop go. I was pleased. I do have to see if all Mark VIII fans pull the same. Might have to get one of those wind meters.....

I really think that I am going to get that electrical gauge...

I'm Wondering if it would be better to extend the shroud on these fans to cover more of the radiator? Would it run hotter tho down the road cause all of it would be blocked off then? But should cool faster when turned on?

I bought a Mk8 fan before I knew it wouldn't fit my car, and the shroud was a nearly perfect fit for my Griffin. I pulled it out of the shed the other day, and it appears that along with the better fitting shroud, there is also a lot more open area (larger fan diameter) compared to the Taurus fan, allowing for more bypass air....

The Taurus fan shroud really blocks a lot of the radiator.

Oh, and there's no way my lower hose is collapsing..... That would've been too easy!

With my big 3 core its something like 27-30"? wide between tanks and the lincoln fan doesn't cover it 100% probably have like 3 " on each side then its too tall it is like a 1" below the bottom core too, but it does cool it just fine it seems

I wish I had that kind of capacity! The '66 A body has a tiny radiator in comparison.

Also, the depth of the Lincoln fan wouldn't fit between my radiator and water pump pulley, even with the shroud completely removed. I might try an F body dual fan setup next.

Tripower455, have you installed the A/C seal kit that Pontiac used on its A-Body A/C cars? Its purpose was to force all the air entering in grill area through the radiator at speed. PY carries the seals and fasteners as part numbers RPE211 and RPE211F on page 49 of their GTO catalog. If you have the non-A/C radiator and core support, the bottom pieces will require a little fudging to get them attached. While it helps to seal the radiator up to the core support, one of the major differences is all the air coming in the big slots on the bumper has to go through the radiator instead of under the core support and adding to the high pressure area under the car and in the engine compartment.
