66GTO Jim, well put, that's exactly why I keep reminding people in this thread this is not about things people do to CUSTOMIZE their cars, this is about the things that we see time and again on HIGH DOLLAR RESTORATIONS that are incorrect. As someone said in an earlier post, if you tell a lie enough times, some people begin to think it's the truth.

So that's all I'm looking for, those instances where megabucks are spent restoring a car to FACTORY CORRECT, yet these resto shops keep making the same mistakes over and over again. Then these cars appear at Mecum, Barrett-Jackson, a museum (like Volo) with descriptions stating it's a meticulous nut-and-bolt resto, everything is correct, but it's a 1968 GTO with a Judge wing.

Just trying to keep the air clear, preserve some history, and educate those that may not be aware that when you see a team photo of the Denver Broncos, and one guy is wearing a Green Bay Packer uniform, that's not correct. If you staged the photo and know it's wrong, not a problem. Modifications and personalization to your own car are NOT an issue here.

Well actually, you guys are pretty tame compared to the Corvette crew. I had a resto-rod Vette that I showed at the Chevy VetteFest event for a few years and I watched the points car judging which is really intense and a little on the anal retentive side ( ok a lot on the AR side. ).

Right now my GP is a Concours - Day 2 car, I am trying to decide if I want to go all the way with it and return it to bone stock for next years POCI meeting.

With the Vettes and to a lesser degree the GTOs & TAs there is so much documentation that it is "easier" to know how to do the restore correctly. One of the challenges to doing a big car is trying to find what is actually correct. Case in point, the carpet, over or under the seat tracks? But for me that is what makes it more fun to try and do this.

The real important thing is to enjoy your car whatever you do with it. When I took it to the show in Milwaukee the drive up there and back was as much fun as the show itself!

My biggest pet peeve has to be when steel wheels are incorrectly painted body color with poverty caps on mid 60's Pontiacs.

Example: Iris Mist car with Iris Mist painted wheels (or the worst - white wheels on a white car).

There were only a few wheel colors available each year and only cars that were painted these colors received body colored wheels.

People that severely overuse the word "RARE" while selling a part, and just HAVE to put it in all caps everytime they use it.

People (mainly the catalog parts people) that use the word "Billet" everytime an aluminum part is mentioned. "Billet" simply refers to non-cast material, IOW's: bar stock. But people try to apply that term to anything they can as if it somehow multiplies the value.

I hate seeing aftermarket chrome acorn style lug nuts on purported 'frame off restored' vehicles. Why can't the flippers, or muscle car sales types spend extra the $50 on the right lug nuts? They're asking top dollar, but miss so many small details. The icing on the cake is the blacked out Rally II with Auto Zone lug nuts.

"Tri-Carb", I think that is what it was called. 1966 was the only year that 442s had it (L69 option). Olds also had the triple carb "J-2" option in the fifties.

I think it comes down to personal taste. Lets face it. Some peoples taste should be left in a pig pen and some are so uptight, that their panty is showing through their jeans.

For the most part, if you are going aftermarket do the damn car justice and do it with style and purpose. If you are going original, do it as best you can with correct parts. Mixing the two is a retards game of guess which shell holds the goose egg.

I think some of these peeves may have to do with the owner's age. I was introduced to GTOs in the '80's by my father. Back then, especially 64-67 all seemed to wear Cragars with a little rake to them (so the back end wasn't dragging). So, that's the way my '67 is. Now, if you were to show me a '80's G-body like a MCSS or Grand National I get peeved when anything is altered from stock. The blood boils when I see more and more riding on stupid 20"+ wheels.

This is from an ad for a very decent '68 GTO vert, which is for the most part, original.

From the ad copy quote: "under the hood has all the factory components. Orig. intake, carb, dist, Harrison radiator, chrome valve covers and orig. air cleaner element."



No falsehoods here, nice to have the original element but I bet they're oblivious to the incorrectness of the decal.

Overheard at a car cruise I took my car to this past Wednesday. There are 4 red, white, and blue GTO stickers on the car, the hood was up displaying my PONTIAC engine, and my personalized plate reads NTANOVA.

I had to bite my tounge to keep from replying to this idiot!!
