I'm not a fan of clones either. My guess is that it will probably cost about the same to restore a Lemans or Tempest to stock or to clone it, so that's why people do it. More appealing to crowds too.
Personally I sometimes feel that at times it would seem easier to have a less desireable model or a vehicle that it doesn't really matter much what model it is. Like a Catalina, I don't think anyone really cares what submodel it is although a 2+2 or SD would be nice, a plain jane would get the looks as well. You don't need to clone it at that point basically. |

I came into possession of a GTO clone from a tempest, it has the front/back/hood and all the badges. It kind of ruins the sleeper image I would like. People see GTO and automatically assume its fast.

LOL! This thread is entirely why people with Pontiacs don't show up to shows. You don't see Ford guys or Chevy guys criticizing cars over dumb mundane details. Air cleaner decals? Shoot, if your going to leave the hood up, might as well have some decal on there. Stops the general public from asking over and over what engine is in there.
Anyway, my main petpeeve which fills both the misused term and misplaced is Pontiacs that don't ever come out of their garages except for a show or to the local cruise night. DRIVE THEM! As for the clones, no problem whatsoever with them, emblems and all, as you can't exactly go out and buy a new GTO or whatever and the originals you find are typically priced out of budget. My pet peeve? "Survivors" that are in such sorry shape paint, body, or interior wise that you'd wonder exactly what they survived. A nuclear holocaust? lol

No issue with people building them how they like...clone it, don't care...use whatever aircleaner decal you like.
My issue is claims of correctly "restored" yet everything under the car is painted flat black, or worse gloss black.....2nd gen F body guys know, thats not even close to right. And when people just go cheap for no reason...those ribbed flex radiator hoses...c'mon - buy the real thing ya cheap #&$*#^@...lol.

A perfect example of what we're talking about is the black 1969 Judge convertible that's coming up at Mecum, expected to fetch 6 figures. Riding on redline tires, the description states it's been given a complete frame-off restoration using 90 percent NOS parts, yet it has a rear sway bar. That's what this thread is about. Many of these high dollar auction cars appear in books and magazines because, well face it, they sold for a lot of money. Many people use these cars as an example of what's "correct" or "not correct", not realizing the person that restored the car didn't do the research, they trusted a body and paint shop to do it, and the resto shop didn't know any better because they work on Chevys most of the time.
This list is a just a way to help people from people from making the same mistakes over-and-over, simply because the same items (like red air cleaner decals) are seen more and more today. Looking through these threads on this site, 2 or 3 times a week we see discussions about some of the items mentioned above. People just aren't sure, and they want to be correct. When you're in a strange area, and you see a "Road Closed" with a "Detour" sign, how many times have you seen people simply follow the car in front of them, assuming they know the way? Can't tell you how many times I had this happen to me, and I think we've all done it. We had construction by us one year, and the detour happened to take me right to my house. Every day I did this, there would be 1 or 2 cars behind me as I pulled into my driveway, believing I knew the way through the detour. They would then make u-turns and either give me a dirty look, or politely ask how to get out of the subdivision. And that's how red air cleaner decals end up on $70,000 restorations. People innocently believe that since someone spent a TON of money on their car, and it appears totally stock and correct, that everything MUST be correct, so they go buy an air cleaner decal. Just to reiterate, if you want to put Chevelle emblems on your GTO, I really don't care. It's your car. This isn't about personalization of your car, or your own personal taste, it's about correcting some myths for those that WANT to make their car appear stock.

After market radios in a other wise stock dash. Just tells me this guy should see a Doctor. Speakers installed in door pads. Tachometers installed on consoles with the wiring on top for all to see. Trio gauges with white faces when the cluster gauges have a black face. Sport mirrors on a cars that did not come in that model year or those cheap after market sport mirrors.

One more reason to NOT own a GTO!!
Man you guys would eat my Tempest up for breakfast, lunch and dinner!! I think that yes, IF you say that it is a restoration and you do that stuff you can say it is a peeve. But if it is your car really who cares....
My car started out getting a restoration, then this broke, that got dented, ran out of money. The car started to look mean. So I went with it. I have bumpers painted, no rocker molding etc, engine compartment painted black, missing engine paint cause it flaked off you name it. Here's the great thing. I always get like 50 people standing around my car cause I let people sit in it, start it up, rev the motor, listen to the aftermarket stereo at full blast. Cause yes it is a 67' but the point is to drive it. Is this the type of sticker you are talking about?  If so, GUILTY!! Check out my Rally II's are you gasping and holding your heart yet?

Remember, Mike Noun started this thread to highlight high dollar supposedly "100% correct" restorations that folks who are restoring their cars may inadvertantly use as a prototype. They tehn spend money on the wrong parts thinking they are correct for that model and year and they are not.
The thread is not meant to bash anyone who wants to personalize or restify or upgrade their own Pontiac. The threads intent is to point out items that are incorrect for certain years or models that have become so common that folks think those cars came that way. Couple of quick examples: Rally IIs or a His/Hers shifter on a 66 GTO where the ad reads 100% restored to factory original. Nothing wrong with anyone adding these, but they are incorrect for any 1966 GTO that is being restored (or sold) as a 100% restored to factory original car. Speaking of Rally IIs, how many ultra high dollar, restored to original 1969 427 Yenko Camaros do you see wearing Pontiac Rally IIs? These are correct for Yenko Camaros. Don Yenko was a road racer and added these wheels to the Yenko Camaros for better handling. Can't remember the last time I saw a "correctly restored" Yenko Camaro with them. LOL Jim
