To rebuild the solinoids you would have to re wind the lacquer coated copper wire, if you nick the coating, the unit shorts out, plus you have to get the final winding ground just right... I have tried myself.. Just easier to buy a repo for $29 and change out the internals, assuming you are dead on keepingthe original case that no one will ever see, .. way easier... but......to eash their own.. radio shack sells the lacquer coated copper wire... that is all you need to re wind one...

Steve,

Spoke to Frank today and I don't think he can go to E-Town.

Drove the 72 to Musclepalooza at Englishtown this weekend. Met a bunch of people who recognized the car from this thread.

Don't you just hate it when you go to the senior prom and somebody else shows up wearing the exact same dress as you???

:-)

But seriously, Dave (necdb3) brought his beautiful March 1972 built '72 T/A, 4-speed, A/C, polyethylene valance-equipped car and we parked next to each other (His is on the right). Great guy and even nicer car. It was neat to have another 72 there to compare to. I even found I was missing an A/C hose bracket on the inner fender. In fact I have the bracket, I just could never figure out where the darn thing was supposed to go! Mystery solved, thanks to Dave.

At the end of the day, I wound up with a second place for the Pontiac class. An absolutely stunning turquoise, 65 GTO won 1st place. It was an amazing car and definitely deserved the win. - Though, I think I had more fun! When we were sitting in the cars, waiting to drive up for the trophy presentation, the Hemmings people were telling the drivers that they could shut their cars off to avoid overheating on the 90 degree day. I just smiled, rolled up the windows and turned the A/C to max and watched the temp gauge sit happily at 170 degrees.

Try doing that in a tri-powered GTO! :-)

Congrats Steve,
Its great having another car to compare those little items to and thats whats great about seeing original cars that have not been restored. Things like paint dabs, decal locations, hose routes....its just great to have confirmation sometimes too.

Enjoy and thanks for posting. Throw a pic of the goat if available ?

Amazingly enough, I found that little a/c hose bracket in the "box-o-leftover parts" I have. Here it is all nice and installed:

And here is that 65 GTO that won first place:

If you want to see some more photos, here is a link to the yenko.net site where I posted them. There were some nice Pontiacs in attendance, a lot more than usual. Two 72s T/As were there, two 73 T/As, a maroon 74 SD455 Formula, several pre-1981 Trans Ams, and a bunch of GTOs.

Steve,

It was a pleasure meeting you and seeing your car. Your car is beautiful! Hopefully we can do that again and maybe get Frank Fletcher and anyone else with a 72 to attend.

Default AC Lines

Steve,

I can't believe all the work and time and detail you've put into this amazing build...only to get 2nd place
I've been using your tips, knowledge and links posted in this thread to get my rebirth...out of the womb, so to speak.

But since you are talking about A/C lines and brackets, I do have an obvious question.
Have you sought out or reseached OE sytle connectors for you A/C lines?
I've got the same style hose clamp looking things on my lines from a 20 year old repair, and was looking for a cleaner (or OE) setup.
I read here somewhere that Texas Trans Ams makes them, but so far they haven't returned my email.

It seems that all the unseen detail you've done would be discounted by some show judge as soon as he sees those clamps....No?

Tuna:

What you show for A/C line clamps is correct for your car. Swedged hoses did not start being used until 1974 I believe, or maybe very late 73.

Hose clamp style fittings are correct.

You guys are right! Though the worm clamped version is not too esthetically pleasing, it is correct for the 1972 model year. My Grandmother's '75 has the one-piece hose setup with the swedged fittings that resembles one giant octopus. I think that version started in 74.

My '73 is worm clamp free. My '72 has the worm drives. Not sure exactly when they started the worm free hoses.

Later-
