My brothers BBC 70 Camaro with 310cc conventional heads and a plate ran 8.7 last fall on radials and caltracs at just shy of 3600lbs - Bankbooks turbo motor makes his hp production look like childs play. It's really not that hard or expensive to get the small tire radial cars to hook - it's just attention to detail like anything else. Just pay attention to what's already been done by many, many others. Another friend has run his Nova in the 8's on a fogger and this year on a couple small 70ish mm turbos - again on radials at about 3700lbs. Then there's Jesse Nelson who I watched go 8.6 this fall again with turbo and radials in a Chevelle that I believe is pushing 4000lbs - on and off the throttle to get the front end back down on E85 no intercooler. Then of course there was the class winner who went 7.68 @ 188mph with a couple 78's I believe in a 3380lb fox body on ethanol - again on radials... Look inside the car and apart from the cage work it looks like a Mustang. Keep in mind the class requires all lights, signals, etc, a 20-30min cruise, mufflers and no wheelie bars. These are just guys in my podunk little corner of the country who get to race about 4 months a year... lol. A couple a bucks, attention to details available from others experience, and some track time, and Bankbook should be haulin' with that rig. No reason not to see that 2nd gen deep in the 8's IMHO - even if it's 4000lbs.

It's not that easy I walk the pits at the NMCA world finals cars that ran that fast all the time were big money rides. I looked inside these cars under them they had bars running every where not just a cage but a purpose built race car with a Mustang body on it or a Chevelle body on it.Some still had factory frame rails but a race car.Anyway I wish him all the best I hope he does not get hurt. You have a bad azz ride yourself race safe.

Congrats Doc!! As others have said with traction you will have some killer timeslips! What did you run for timing?

Whoa ! Awesome times for just getting going with that thing,
Even more impressive doing it with BF Goodrich drag radials. I know Pdude put down some good numbers running those tires but IMO M/T and Hoosiers are a better drag radial tire , might help the 60ft with some better rubber ?

Really some great conversation guys and I appreciate all of it. Polars right concerned about my safety and all, look how nice his car hooks in those vids, makes it look easy.
Believe me there is enough power in the combination to go the 8.50 the car is certified for, and a whole lot more. I would really like to hear suggestions on the rear suspension as I really need to get it right. I too have seen guys in the seven with second gens running cal track set ups, ladder bars and 4 link. My preference is towards a caltrac because I really do not want to cut it up. But, to stay above ground and out of the ER I gladly will. Timing wise she is locked at 28 taking out a degree per poumd of boost. Nice and safe running C-16 until it is dialed in properly and then I will install the methanol injection. The rear is a Dana 60 with 3.53 ratio. Th etires are 315's and so far seem to be gripping real well. But then again I wasnt launching that hard with any real boost. Paul, when you are ready to go turbo, I will bring the mig and some steel and we will get a set of headers going! You know what the great thing is...with the turbo you can enjoy the car every day. Change the boost you are running and go faster or slower that day at the track. Now the car is a challenge to yourself to race, and more fun I think.

Doc,
Congrats on getting thge car out and having a safe outing. You are doing the right thing byworking your way into it. I didn't have the blower on my car when I first brought the car out. His car will go mid to low 8's easily! For those that are doubtful remember he has a 106mm turbo! Good luck Doc, be safe, and make us boosted boyz proud! BTW, the offer still stands to drive that beast if you want me too!

Calvert split mono springs in the rear, with the drag race cal-tracs. And put a good shock, like a Strange or Affco double adjustable in the rear. Do not even bother with a single adjustable.
You might need to invest in their pinion angle shims also. Make sure the front has 4-6" of suspension travel in it, with a good spring in the front. Something with some stored energy so it helps pick the front end up. You don't wanna have a dead spring in the front because the car will never weight transfer. With that engine/gearing combo it should go 8.80's easily, and 60' in the 1.4 or quicker range. I can't wait to get my new turbo combo done and come mix it up with you guys. Are you and bad69bird and some of the other turbo guys going to the Pontiac Nat's next year?

Agree on safety - should be in compliance with the rules and it's a good idea to go above and beyond. I've got a 7.5 cage in my 67 and I've only been 8.6 with it. I wear a 15 layer suit too, when I've never been asked for more than a 5. I don't think I'd want to go faster than 9's in a small tire car without a funny car cage over my head...
A 7.5 cage can be built into a 2nd gen - you don't have to buy/fab a chassis and drop the body on. I'm not saying it wouldn't be easier, just that it can be done if you have the drive and will to do it. Don't fab a thing though without buying a copy of the SFI spec book and reading it. With lots of motor comes the need to pay at least equal attention to the chassis - or just be happy running de-tuned If you're not opposed to a back half a 4 link, 33x18.5 tires and wheelie bars would be the quickest and easiest way to solve traction issues. If you want to do the small tire deal though rest assured it can be done. Ire65GTO makes some good points in that regard. I'd second them and further reinforce the 4-6" of travel and push hard to be on high end of that. Make sure everything moves freely, get any forward rake out of the car. Calvert also sells a shock setup that is inexpensive and we've had good success with. And at your power level plain and simple you're gonna need a boost controller. You should be able to get the car to take 800-900hp on the hit and from there ramp it in depending on various track conditions. Good luck with it and have fun!!

And the Rancho's are definitely a budget friendly shock, that works pretty well... My old '69 Firebird had those, went 1.40 pretty consistent and it was just a 10.0X car...
For something with at or exceeding 1,000hp I feel he will need a shock with a tad bit more control.

If I had a job, I'd already have the engine out of the car and apart. Only change I really need to make is a set of dished pistons. It would be interesting to see how a set of SD WP's would react to boost - pretty well I'm guessing.

I have been following your build and you deserve a lot of credit with a great build. Clean fabrication that hauls AZZ. You and a few other Pontiac guys are the inspiration for my turbo build. My turbo will not be as big as yours though, but I am hoping for at least 1200 hp.

Thanks to all for the support! Got alot of pm's on this and if all you guys go turbo that said they want to...next season will have many fast cars "on the wind" as I call it!
No I am not from down under. I am a born and raised New Yorker. I have been told I have had an accent by many but none ever gave me that one! lol Definitely getting a chute. When the car ran 140mph at 11.xx I new it definitely needed it. Thats why I am seriously looking into suspensions now. Would like to do it all at once. Do you think a trailer hitch with a slide in mount would work and be legal? Need the sleeper look.lol

I posted this in Tom V's Know your competition thread in boost section. A 406 Chevy Brodix head with flows similar to a good valve job/port match E head(285 cfm) making 1025 HP at 14.6 psi 5800 rpm. 1502 at 28 psi 5600rpm http://www.hotrod.com/projectbuild/h...ild/index.html Add 30% more airflow capacity heads(@370cfm) and the turbo(s) to match flow requirements and 1330 hp at 15 psi(pump gas) and 1948 hp at 28 psi(race gas) is do-able. A 400 cfm head at 15 psi about 1438 and 28 psi about 2100 hp. It takes a sound build and good tune to get these kind of numbers and repeat. No doubt that Doc has capacity on board to meet/exceed his cert. However a glance at a generic 106 compressor map suggests it would be a bit small to support 2000 hp. NBD there are bigger turbo's should the need arise. |
