Default Factory color chart for stripes and decals

I ran across a guy on craigslist yesterday that owns a '71 455HO Formula with ram air, it's lime green with side stripe and well optioned and he's had it for around 30 years. He recently did a full resto on it and was selling a part I needed for my car. He didn't know about PY so I sent him the link to the forums and hopefully he will join. Anyway, he sent me the color charts below on '71 side stripe and ram air decal colors and I was wanting to see if anyone has the similar chart from '72. I'm surprised to see that silver would have come with a blue stripe and black ram air decal and just wondering if '72 was the same. Thanks for any help on this one. Rick

Thanks for posting those charts, Rick. Most likely came from the 1971 Firebird Assembly Manual.

Glad to see that Lucy Blue gets the white "RAM AIR" decals, as my Formy currently has black callouts and they are difficult to see in low light situations. White it is when the resto is done!

hey Lloyd, I was suprised to see that only 3 of the 15 colors available called for the black ram air sticker and 4 called for the black stripes. Yours will show up far better with the white on blue for sure. I'm betting these combinations didn't change much if any for '72. Hard to picture my car in silver with blue stripes, I don't think anyone repros the stripes in blue from what I've seen.

So - are you going to re-install the stripes when your car is done, Rick?

Since yours has black guts, I'm sure the black stripes will look great on it.

By the way, I sure do prefer the '71-'72 stripes over the '73 and later stripes!

I hope that the guy who sent you those charts DOES join up here. Can't wait to hear about his HO Formy and see some pics of it!

I do like the '71-'72 stripe a little better than the '73 stripe. They are both growing on me though but I'll wait till the end to decide if I put the '72 stripe on it. I'd have to go with black if I did. I'm trying to get the guy with the '71 HO to join, it's a pretty rare and unique car.

supposed to be but since he has owned it since the late '70's, I don't know if he would have ever pulled the PHS on it

I didn't think they offered the D98 stripe in '71 on Birds. Were they a late model year offering?

Hey Dennis - take a gander at that first stripe color chart that Rick posted in post #1. Dunno if it was a late-year deal or not, though.

Yeah Lloyd, I did look at the chart for the stripes and saw it was dated Jan. 1971, so maybe it was a mid-year deal. Have you seen any factory literature with pictures, or original Firebirds with the D98? I know I haven't, other than the '72 stripe installed on '71's. The color chart mentions that the front fender louver and rear quarter side marker light bezel get painted to matcht the stripe.

I like the idea of black stripes with the blacked out louver and bezel along with black Ram Air decals on Canyon Copper....hmmm.

Can't recall if I've ever seen the D98 side stripe on a '71 in the past, Dennis, but my memory is rapidly failing . . .

You're idea of a Canyon Copper 'bird with black stripes, "RAM AIR" callouts, sidemarker lamp bezel and louver does have me drooling. Would definitely be a killer combo!

I'm trying to recall if one of my former classmates Formula 350 was a '71 or '72. It was a beater 38 years ago when we were attending the automotive technology program at TSTI in Waco.

It was dark green (Laurentian or Wilderness) with the gold D98 stripes. Believe it was a Saginaw 4-speed car as well.

I'm getting ready to put stripes on my 71 Formula. The charts listed have some crazy color combos. My car is white, so it should have blue stripes and red ram air decals????
