Sorry, but doing what you described a few posts up is far more reckless than letting the guy pass you before changing lanes. Period. You're INTENTIONALLY putting another driver in even more danger when you could do otherwise. There are enough morons that don't know how to drive doing stupid stuff by mistake, but to purposely do it, especially by a professional driver, is truly frightening. You're making a "dangerous" situation (a guy exceeding the limit to pass) a whole lot more dangerous. On purpose. Two wrongs don't make a right. Good thing most truckers don't drive like that. I respect the hell out of those guys, mainly because 90% of them are very professional, predictable and SAFE. Maneuvering 80k lbs of vehicle around the average morons driving around has to be maddening. After seeing several big trucks lose their treads over the years I give them wide berth. I witnessed one accident from far too close a vantage point because of blown tire.... an accident that could've been prevented completely if the guy had simply exceeded the limit by a few mph to pass the truck. Instead, he paced the truck at EXACTLY the speed limit for miles on end, only to take a piece of tread in the windshield. shattering it. The havoc that ensued amongst the 100 cars piled up behind him, as he swerved all over the road before pulling over was unreal. Yeah, good thing he did the safe thing and drove exactly the limit. I always pass trucks as quickly as possible. Even if that means exceeding the limit. Do you really believe that the guy passing you at 5-10 over the limit is more dangerous than the guy intentionally cutting him off? Do you truly believe that "you're life is in danger" as he goes by, and that you're making the situation safer by doing the above? Please....... As far as speed limits go.... The national speed limit when I started driving was 55. Driving 70 when it was 55 was unsafe, but now that the speed limit is 70 on the same roads, it's now magically safe? In many cases, the posted speed limit is a revenue enhancing tool for the local and state coffers.

![]() No offence intened...don't take it that way..it's simply your opinion.. I'm sorry but I'm not going to drive the way you think I should...I don't expect you to drive like I want you to....I'll just pass you if I feel the need..safely !! I won't tailgate you, blow horn, switch lanes like some damn fool...I'll just flash lights and hope you respect my right too...If you don't move...I won't get bent out of shape...I'll just wait you out.. If I'm endangering other people ...that's different...I'm only talking about 5-10 MPH....not 85-90 MPH...In my case it's about a effecient operating Speed/RPM range. Got to use comon sense..and not get all bent out of shape..In my 03 Bonnie...I could care less...I'm not towing 9k trailer..All I'm saying is maybe there is a valid reason someone wants to pass you when you are only going speed limit...not for you to judge..

but in your situation,,your speeding is the only wrong,i follow the rules im not in you car,i dont know your speed,i dont have radar i give 6-10 car lengths before i pull out its not my fault 40-50 car lenths are needed BECAUSE YOU DECIDE TO SPEED bottom line is your logic is wrong,,like they say you cant teach an old dog new tricks im done with this topic,, some people are an accident looking for a place to happen. |

If safety were your number one concern, you'd let him pass you and then change lanes, legal or not. Just because you are doing the speed limit or under doesn't mean you can't be reckless. Intentionally doing something less safe than the alternative is the definition of reckless. The bottom line is that 5-10 over is not always unsafe, and certainly safer than your aforementioned "habit", legal or not. FWIW, I always drive as if I were riding a motorcycle. I pay attention and do whatever it takes to avoid an accident, (even the "acceptable" parade kiss). I've been in 4 accidents (3 sideswipes and one rear end) in my 29 years of driving, and every one was the other guys fault. 3 were in my 20' long red and white F-250, that the other drivers didn't "see" (probably because they weren't looking). All occurred well under the speed limit. All but the rear end would've been avoided if I could've passed the rolling road block. |

when I was taking the smith system of driving we where told to try to space out the distance , which is impossible to do as every idiot thinks that space is ment for them when they pass us , I don't haul light liquid or tight fill loads ( haul heavy alkalis and Acid s) , my loads only fill 1/2 to 3/4 of the tank and not baffled so hthey slosh in all dirrections , in a quick change of lanes I have to accellerate to push the product back to the back of the tank so it won't flip the truck over( also its part of the law of physics to change direction you have to accellerate in another direction) , in 20 years of hauling this stuff Ionly had one near rollover as the product wasn't moving right and it walked up the sides of the trailer and tried to flip it . I had the back tandem on the one side about 4 " off the pavement , I admit It was my fault for not paying attention to what was going on in front of me . but there is a reason they call it a limit , the sign dosen't say aproxamitely . as for mangling people well 60 , I can try to send you some real nice accident pictures from cars and pick up towing trailers at slower speeds courtesy of several fire depts . they aren't pretty ,one I was shown I saw a nice car ( early 70's chevelle ) on top of the tow vehicle ( crew cab ford dually) , with the driver and passengers under it . tow straps ( 10K rated ) broke while the guy was trying to stop quickly from 45 mph trying to miss a deer . the car travelled thru the front of the enclosed trailer and stopped only after it took the cab roof off the truck . The major cause of accidents are driving too fast for road conditions, road rage, not paying attention and just plain lack of skill. Driving school is a joke. They should be teaching "Big rig etiquette" Right or wrong tangle with a big rig and you lose. Period. I haven't had a ticket in over 20 years and have never had an accident that wasn't me getting rear ended by someone NOT paying attention. I drive for a living and get cut off and have inattentive morons pull out in front of me everyday. I learned to just shrug it off and not stress over it.

I only have three gears + OD in this E4OD...not a14 or 16 speed Road Ranger or newer 6 & 8 speed autos. ..Once I slow down to below 2,400-2,600 I'm dead..Then I get cussed for being slow !! Can't win.. If you are a commercial over the road driver then finding a gear to maintain speed is no problem....for you. I hear ya Stimpy...I have driven many different trucks (NO OTR rigs)in my time...not my first rodeo. I spent 17 years as a career Firefighter in the I495/I95 DC metro area and I have pretty well saw way to many mangled injured people every day.....but not fatalities every day/night thank God. And yes...the bad incidents hang with you..Most a result of STUPID driving behavior...not people running 5 mph over limit..![]() All I'm saying is....just be cool and don't judge others..even slow Prius drivers.. ![]() Happy Holidays Peeps..

The Smith system has 5 major components that they teach and if followed they will make you a much better, safer, driver, you don't have to be a Semi driver for them to apply either. 1) Aim high in steering. 2) Get the big picture. 3) Keep your eyes moving. 4) Leave yourself an out. 5) Make sure they see you. Link to Smith driving system: http://www.smith-system.com/ If your looking for a Christmas gift for any driver, especially a newer recent one on your list one of their DVD s would make a great gift, it might even save their life at some point. A much better gift than most any thing else I can think of. The best part many people could watch it and become better drivers, parents, grand parents, other teens included. A gift that would truly keep on giving. Okay my public service announcement is over.................................

Great PSA and an awesome idea! I learned the Smith System in HS drivers ed almost 30 years ago, although I had forgotten what it was called. It makes just as much sense now as it did then. Too bad most folks don't seem to use it. |
